WHITEWATER, Wis. – The UW-River Falls women's soccer team secured a 2-1 victory over UW-Whitewater on Saturday afternoon at Fiskum Field, collecting its first WIAC win of the season.
Bouncing back from a tough loss against UW-La Crosse on Wednesday, the Falcons scored once in each half and held off a late push from the Warhawks to claim three points in the league standings. The win also marks the Falcons' first road win at UW-Whitewater since 2006, snapping a 12-game winless streak in Whitewater.
It took under two minutes for the Falcons to open the scoring, with Elizabeth Felty scoring her first of the season, converting a pass from Valerie Leonard to give the visitors the early lead. Whitewater responded in the 41st minute with a goal from Brooklynn Carlson, sending the teams into halftime tied at 1-1.
Again the Falcons netted an early goal to open a period. Just over five minutes into the second half, Lexi Atkinson scored the eventual game-winner, finishing a setup from Emery Bigler for her fourth goal on the year.
UWRF outshot UWW 9-6, including a 6-3 edge in shots on goal while corner kicks were deadlocked at five apiece.
Goalkeeper Courtney Bain played the full 90 minutes and recorded two saves.
The Falcons (9-3, 1-1 WIAC) return to action next Wednesday, Oct. 8 with a non-conference match at Hamline University.
