Falcons face off against Blue Devils in first round of WIAC Tournament

The UW-River Falls men's hockey team opens postseason play this weekend as the No. 4 seeded Falcons are set to host a WIAC Tournament first round matchup against No. 5 seed UW-Stout Feb. 21-22 at Hunt Arena.

2025 WIAC TOURNAMENT

  • UWRF finished with 26 points in the WIAC standings with an 8-6-1 league record, receiving the No. 4 seed for the postseason tournament.
    • Since the inception of the WIAC Commissioner's Cup in 2014, the Falcons hold a 9-18-3 playoff record.
    • Last season, UWRF swept UW-Superior with 3-2 and 1-0 wins in the first round, but fell at UW-Stevens Point in the semifinals.
    • UWRF won the Commissioner's Cup in 2015, advancing to the championship game with wins over UW-Eau Claire in the semifinals, and defeating UW-Stevens Point 3-1 in the title game.

AGAINST THE BLUE DEVILS

  • This weekend's games will mark the 133-134th all-time meetings between UW-River Falls and UW-Stout, with the Falcons leading the series 93-34-5.
  • The Falcons won two of three regular season matchups against the Blue Devils. All three contests were one-goal games, including a pair of overtime results. 
    • In WIAC Tournament history, the Falcons and Blue Devils have faced each other eight times, with UWRF leading the series 4-3-1.
    • UWRF and UW-Stout most recently faced each other in the first round of the conference playoffs in 2023, with the Blue Devils prevailing 4-1 and 4-2 in Menomonie, Wis.

FALCON NOTES

  • UWRF closed out the regular season by sweeping Northland College with 7-3 and 5-1 victories Feb. 13-15 at Hunt Arena. 
    • Thursday's 7-3 win was highlighted by Jonny Meiers' four goals, UWRF's most since 2018, and a program single-game record five assists from Alex Atwill.
    • Saturday was a game of firsts, with Hunter Jones scoring his first and second goals as a Falcon, Parker Korman scoring the first of his career, and senior Valentino Passarelli scoring his first of the season on Senior Night.
    • Brennan Boynton started both games in net and totaled 47 saves with a .922 save percentage.
  • The Falcons have scored power play goals in five consecutive games and finished the regular season with the second-best power play in the WIAC, scoring 16 goals on the man advantage with a 22.9% success rate. 
  • The duo of Jonny Meiers and Dylan Smith paced the Falcon offense during the regular season, both finishing among the top-seven scorers in the WIAC. 
    • Meiers ranks third in the WIAC with 14 goals and Smith ranks fifth with 27 points.
  • Cole Teleki is the top scoring defenseman in the WIAC with 16 points off six goals and 10 assists. In addition, he leads the league with 53 blocked shots.
  • Goaltender Brennan Boynton started all 25 regular season games and finished with the most saves per game in the WIAC, averaging 24.7 per game. He ranks second with a .907 save percentage and third with a 2.65 goals against average.
