Lune's overtime game-winner lifts Falcons past Blugolds, 3-2

RIVER FALLS, Wis. — The UW-River Falls men's hockey team earned a 3-2 win in overtime Friday night over UW-Eau Claire.

Reid Lune's goal with 45 seconds left in overtime earned the Falcons a pair of points in the WIAC standings, improving their overall record to 12-9-1 and 6-5-1 in the conference.

Despite the Falcons opening the scoring in the second period, the Blugolds answered with a pair of quick goals to take a 2-1 lead into the third period. A Jonny Meiers power play goal tied the game at 2-2, forcing overtime before Lune's heroics.

The Falcons and Blugolds went scoreless in the first frame, with the visitors controlling most of the possession while leading in shots on goal 11-6.

Just under four minutes into the middle stanza, the Falcons opening the scoring as a Tyler Lee slapshot from the point made its way through traffic and past Blugold goaltender Ethan Roberts. It took just five minutes however for UWEC to tie and gain a lead, scoring 1:22 after Lee's goal with another a few minutes later to lead 2-1 heading into the third period.

The Falcons had four power play chances through the first 40 minutes and outshot the Blugolds in the middle frame but still found themselves down a goal. Seven minutes into the third, UWEC's Cade Lemmer was called for goaltender interference and on the ensuing faceoff, a well-placed snapshot from Meiers tied the game at two apiece.

Late in overtime, patience from Alex Atwill on a 2-on-1 opportunity led to an Reid Lune as he one-timed the pass from Atwill for the game-winner, his eighth goal of the season and second game-winning goal.

Brennan Boynton was strong in net, tying his season-high with 33 saves while collecting his 12th win of the season.

UWRF and UWEC faces off again tomorrow night at Hunt Arena.
