RIVER FALLS, Wis. — The UW-River Falls baseball program played the last two games of its four-game home-opening series against UW-Stevens Point, winning both games of the second doubleheader.
The weekend series marked the first home games since the reinstatement of the baseball program, as well as the 2025 WIAC opener.
The games moved UWRF's record to 8-5 on the season and 3-1 in WIAC play.
UW-River Falls 6, UW-Stevens Point 3
After a scoreless first inning, the Falcons gained a narrow 1-0 advantage in the bottom of the second as Kale Twombly singled to score Andrew Athmann.
UW-Stevens Point leveled things at 1-1 in the top of the third with a solo home run, but River Falls bounced right back with a home run of its own. Athmann hit a home run to left field to score JV Castillo and put the Falcons ahead 3-1.
The next three innings went scoreless, before Max Krebs hit a solo home run to left field in the bottom of the seventh to push UWRF's lead to 4-1.
The Pointers scored a run in the top of the eighth and went on to have the tying run at the plate, but Jackson Conway struck out the batter to get out of the inning, with UWRF leading 4-2 heading into the bottom of the eighth.
In the bottom of the eighth, Krebs nailed his second home run of the day, this time scoring Twombly to put UWRF up 6-2.
UWRF pitcher Kaleb Zabielski made the start and threw four innings, allowing one run off three hits and striking out two batters. Isaac Mens threw three innings in relief, allowing no runs, two hits, and striking out two batters – he received the win to improve to 1-0 on the year. The Pointers added a run in the top of the ninth, but the Falcons held on to win as EJ Kuster pitched UWRF out of the final inning, winning 6-3.
At the plate, Krebs led the way going 2-4 with four RBIs and two runs. Athmann finished 2-4 with two RBIs and two runs. Kale Twombly went 4-4 with one run and one RBI.
UW-River Falls 12, UW-Stevens Point 7
The first two innings started scoreless, before the Falcons got things going in game two in the bottom of the third. A double-steal saw JV Castillo sneak home for a run, and Kole Paulsen hit a sacrifice hit on the following at-bat to give UWRF a 2-0 lead.
The Falcons rallied more runs in the bottom of the fourth, as a triple by Ryan Eckerle scored Twombly and Carter Klein. Just one at-bat later, Krebs doubled to score Eckerle and extend the Falcons' lead to 5-0. Castillo scored Krebs on a single, giving UWRF a 6-0 lead heading into the fifth inning.
UW-Stevens Point loaded the bases in the top of the fifth, scored three runs to cut the deficit to 6-3, but a huge defensive play by the Falcons stopped any further damage. Connor Weltzien made a gem of a play to catch a line drive with bases loaded, ending the inning without any additional runs for the Pointers. UW-River Falls led 6-3 heading into the bottom of the fifth.
The Falcons erupted for four more runs in the bottom of the fifth, extending the lead to 10-3. Carter Klein hit an RBI-single, and was later scored on an error. Krebs hit a sacrifice fly and Hraby hit an RBI-single, capping off a four-run inning.
The Pointers scored a run off a wild pitch in the seventh, before the Falcons answered back with a two-RBI double by Athmann to bring the lead back to 12-4. UWSP managed one run in the eighth and two more in the ninth, but the Falcons held on to win 12-7.
William Eckstein was the winning pitcher, throwing two innings in relief. Cade Bruett made the start, going 4.2 innings and allowing three runs off two hits — he struck out four batters and walked four. Evan Senobe shut down the game with the final two outs, one of which was a strikeout.
At the plate, Gravy finished 3-4 with two runs and one RBI. Athmann, Eckerle, and Krebs finished with two RBIs each. JV Castillo stole two bases.
Up next, the Falcons will return to FNBRF Field on April 2 for a non-conference doubleheader against St. Scholastica. The first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
