RIVER FALLS, Wis. – The UW-River Falls men's basketball team fell to the Eagles Wednesday evening. The Falcons led at the break and controlled the pace for much of the game, but as the Eagles entered bonus from the stripe, a late free-throw surge proved to be the difference as the Falcons fell 80-75, Wednesday night at Don Page Arena.
River Falls carried the advantage into halftime leading 40-39 behind efficient shooting and strong interior production, shooting 56.7 percent from the field. The Falcons opened the second half trading baskets with the Eagles and maintained the lead for extended stretches, pushing ahead early through the period.
The contest tightened in the final eight minutes as La Crosse capitalized at the foul line, converting 19 free throws in the second half and 23 for the game. Despite several late scoring runs from the Falcons, the Eagles were able to seal the outcome from the stripe down the stretch.
Jeremy Wanguhu led River Falls with 19 points and eight rebounds, while Reid Tengblad, making his second start of the season, added 14 points, seven rebounds, and six blocks. Micah Thompson chipped in 10 points and eight rebounds, and Reggie Postel and Daniel Cleary each scored eight off the bench.
The Falcons shot 51.7 percent from the field and outscored La Crosse in the paint while also winning off the boards, but the Eagles' free-throw advantage ultimately offset River Falls' productivity towards the end of the game.
UW-River Falls returns to WIAC action next Wednesday, taking on the Blugolds in Eau Claire. Tip-off scheduled for 7 p.m.
