RIVER FALLS, Wis. – The UW-River Falls men's hockey team improved to 2-0-0 on the season with a 5-1 victory over St. Scholastica Tuesday night at Hunt Arena. The Falcons scored first and maintained the lead throughout, getting goals from four different players in the victory.
Jonny Meiers led the offensive effort with two goals and an assist, while Keenan Ingram, Garett Drotts and Trace Day also found the back of the net. Chris Quizi turned aside 34 shots to earn the victory in goal.
Meiers opened the scoring for the Falcons at 7:06 of the first period, finishing a give-and-go feed from Gavin Middendorf to give UWRF a 1-0 lead. The Falcons extended their advantage early in the second period when Drotts scored at 2:58, assisted by Meiers and Cole Teleki.
St. Scholastica cut the deficit to one midway through the second period, but UWRF responded with a late-period goal from Ingram at 19:03. Lukas Wallinheimo and Tyler Lee assisted on the goal, sending the Falcons into the second intermission with a 3-1 advantage.
Day pushed the lead to three at 8:16 of the third period, scoring off assists from Alex Atwill and Anthony Cappello. Meiers capped the scoring with a short-handed, empty-net goal at 19:44, assisted by Aaron Martikainen.
UWRF finished with 33 shots on goal, including six on target from Middendorf.
The Falcons remain at home this weekend to host a non-conference series against Concordia College. Game one is set for 7:05 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 6 at Hunt Arena.
