JANESVILLE, Wis. — The UW-River Falls men's hockey team erupted for five first-period goals and cruised to an 8-1 victory over Beloit College Friday night.
The Falcons, now 12-11-1 overall and 6-8 in the WIAC, finished 2-for-5 on the power play, and were led by a combined nine points from Keenan Ingram and Ben Portner, including a hat-trick from Ingram - his second of the season.
UWRF finished with a season-high 54 shots on goal, with the most goals in over a decade. The Falcons last totaled at least eight goals during a 9-0 win over Finlandia University on Dec. 12, 2015. Keenan Ingram also tallied three assists for a total of six points - UWRF's most by a player since Rob Novak had six points (2g-4a) during a 14-2 win over St. Scholastica in 2003.
The Falcons wasted no time taking control against the Buccaneers, scoring scoring four times in the opening 17 minutes before adding a late power-play goal to carry a 5-0 lead into the first intermission.
Keenan Ingram paced the Falcons with a hat trick and three assists for a six-point night. Ingram scored once on the power play and added two even-strength tallies, including his third of the night early in the second period. Ingram's six points was UWRF's most by a player since Rob Novak had six points (2g-4a) during a 14-2 win over St. Scholastica in 2003.
Ben Portner turned in a five-point performance with a goal and four assists, factoring in five of the Falcons' eight goals. Luke Margenau added three assists, while Jonny Meiers recorded two helpers.
Zach Sondreal (1g, 1a), Gavin Middendorf (1g), Ethan Lindahl (1g) and Dylan Smith (1g) also found the back of the net as six different Falcons scored in the win.
Brennan Boynton earned the win, stopping 25 of 26 shots.
The Falcons and Buccaneers play again tomorrow night at 7 p.m. at the Woodman's Center.
