RIVER FALLS, Wis. – The UW-River Falls women's basketball team earned a 69-65 overtime win over No. 17-ranked UW-Platteville on Saturday afternoon at Page Arena.
The Falcons, now 14-9 overall and 6-5 in the WIAC, have now recorded three wins over nationally ranked opponents this season, including a pair over the Pioneers.
Platteville jumped out to an early lead, posting 19 points in the first quarter to the Falcons' 15. River Falls battled back in the second and third periods, tightening the score to 47-46 in favor of the visitors at the end of three. The final quarter saw both teams trade key baskets in a tense finish, including a four-point and-one play from Zoey Buchan, drawing a foul on a made three-pointer, then sinking the free throw to put the Falcons up 60-55 with just over two minutes left in regulation. The Pioneers answered with a 5-1 run to force the extra session tied at 60-60.
In overtime, UWRF delivered when it mattered most, outscoring the Pioneers 9-5 behind timely buckets and free-throw shooting to secure the win.
Zoey Buchan led all scorers with 20 points, connecting on 5-of-9 from the field and a perfect 8-of-8 from the free-throw line, while adding five rebounds and three assists. Jocelyn Plonski contributed a career-high 13 points, and Taylor Clarey finished with eight points and provided crucial defense.
Platteville's Ella Mackiewicz paced the visitors with 15 points.
UWRF's balanced effort included 23 made free throws to tie a season-high, along with strong rebounding down the stretch. The Falcons shot 19-of-53 from the field and nearly 40 percent from beyond the arc.
