RIVER FALLS, Wis. – The UW-River Falls women's soccer team earned their second win of the season Friday afternoon, defeating Augsburg 1-0 at Ramer Soccer Stadium.
The Falcons struck almost immediately, with
Leah Hultman finding the back of the net just 1:33 into the match.
Emery Bigler and
Maddie Finstad were credited with assists on the eventual game winning goal.
UWRF pressured the Auggies throughout the opening half, generating nine shots and six corner kicks. The Falcons put six of their first-half attempts on goal while carrying the 1-0 advantage into halftime.
The Falcons maintained control in the second half, adding eight more shots and seven corner kicks. Augsburg goalkeeper Claire Smothers kept the Auggies within striking distance with nine saves, including stops on
Sarah Wagner,
Brooke McDaniel,
Abby Drontle and Finstad during the second half.
While the Falcons were unable to add to its lead, the Falcon defense made the early goal stand.
Courtney Bain turned away all six Augsburg shots on goal to finish the shutout, making three saves in each half. She made a pair of key stops on Kaidin Camp in the second half, including Augsburg's final shot on goal in the 82nd minute.
UW-River Falls finished with a 17-9 advantage in shots, a 10-6 edge in shots on goal. The Falcons also held a commanding 13-3 advantage in corner kicks. Drontle and Bigler led UWRF with three shots apiece, while Hultman scored on her lone attempt.
The victory moves the Falcons to 2-1 overall on the season.
UW-River Falls returns to action Sunday, Sept. 13, taking on the MSOE Raiders at 1 p.m. in Ramer Soccer Stadium.
