The women's basketball team picked up its first victory of the season with a 58-54 win over Simpson College. The win was the first game for the Falcons in the Northwestern Tournament held in St. Paul.
The Falcons were trailing 31-24 at halftime, but came out in the second half with fire and responded to the intensity of the game that was close throughout. The Falcons took advantage of cold shooting by Simpson, who made only 25 percent of its field goals in the second half. Simpson made 10-20 field goals in the first half.
The Falcons shot 33.3 percent for both field goals (10-30) and three-pointers (4-12) in the second half. This was much better than the first half when UWRF was 8-35 for field goals (22.9) and 2-7 or 28.6 from behind the three-point arc.
Maranda Dohrn (Lake City, MN, Lake City) led the Falcons with her first double-double of the season. She grabbed 15 rebounds and chipped in 11 points. She also added two blocks and two steals.
Teammate Tiffany Gregorich (Altoona, Altoona) tied with Dohrn for the team lead in points with 11. Meanwhile Brittany Gregorich (Altoona, Altoona) and Alise Holst (Plainview, MN, Plainview-Elgin-Millville) added eight.
Ali Sokol lead Simpson with 12 points.
UWRF dominated the offensive rebounding. They held Simpson to zero second chance points while garnering 15 of their own. The Falcons also had 15 steals compared to Simpson's nine.
The Falcons forced 21 turnovers by Simpson.
UWRF improves to 1-1 overall while Simpson drops to 0-2.
The Falcons will play at 5 p.m. on Saturday against the winner of the Northwestern and North Central game.
