The Falcon swimming and diving teams had a rough outing at UW-Eau Claire on Friday night as the Blugolds swept the competition, winning both dual events. The Falcon men fell, 106-28, and the women were defeated, 120-27.
Kevin O' Brien was the lone Falcon to win an event as he took home the 200 yard butterfly with a time of 2:09.49. O'Brien's time is the ninth fastest time in the event in school history. He also took fourth in the 50 yard freestyle to add two more points to the Falcons total. His time of 23.59 is the fastest time in the event this year for the Falcons.
In the 200 yard freestyle, David Slain earned the Falcons three points by finishing in third place in 2:01.45. Hunter Magdanz was just over a second behind, coming in fourth place at 2:02.57. Magdanz also finished in second place in the 500 yard freestyle in 5:26:17.
The team of O'Brien, Dan Ehrenberg, Dan Blasberg and David Slain finished second in the 200 yard freestyle relay, finishing less than two seconds off the winning group from Eau Claire.
Tamra Knight picked up five of the Falcons' 27 points in the women's events. Knight finished fourth in the 1000 yard freestyle at 11:58.85 and came back later to take third in the 200 yard IM at 2:27.58. Knight was the first Falcon to break 12-minutes in the 1000 yard freestyle in 2010-11.
Caitlin Gargulak had a third place finish in the 200 yard freestyle as she finished at 2:13.13. Gargulak also had a fourth place finish in the 500 yard freestyle later in the evening.
The divers saw a pair of freshmen in the top four of the one-meter diving event as Margaret Klabunde came in second with 222.65 as she has finished over 200 in each event in her career. Sam Kniefel came in fourth with a score of 185.50.
The Falcons are back in action on Dec. 3-4 for the Falcon Invitational beginning at 10 a.m. on Friday. The meet will be held at the University of Minnesota.
