Women's Basketball Dominates in Championship Game

Tiffany Gregorich Named Tourney MVP

The women's basketball team won the Northwestern Basketball Tournament with a dominating performance against the host team, Northwestern College, in St. Paul. The Falcons routed the Eagles 74-43.

After Northwestern scored the opening basket, UWRF went on an outstanding 31-0 run and never looked back. The Falcons led by 31 at halftime, holding Northwestern to a mere 14 points.

Tiffany Gregorich (Altoona, Altoona), for the third game in a row led the Falcons in scoring.  She had 14 points, four assists and three steals. She was named the tourney's Most Valuable Player.

Taylor House (Maple Grove, MN, Maple Grove) had her best game of the season, scoring 12 of her own.  She also had six rebounds.

Lauren Pellowski (St. Paul, MN, Tartan) also had 12 points to aide a balanced Falcon attack that saw nine Falcons scoring throughout the contest.

Northwestern tried to come back, mounting a 12-0 run midway through the second half, but the Falcons responded with six straight points of their own, which included back-to-back layups by Maranda Dohrn (Lake City, MN, Lake City). Dohrn was named to the All-Tournament team.

The Falcons came out with hot shooting in the first half, making 17 of 32 field goals.  The Falcons continued their stellar defense throughout the game, holding Northwestern to five field goals in the first half.  Northwestern shot a cold 22.7% in the first half.

The Falcons now have double-digit steals in all three of their games played thus far; 13 against Gustavus, 15 against Simpson and now 13 against Northwestern.

Tess Lueders (Lakeland, MN, Stillwater) lead the Falcons in the battle of the boards, grabbing a career high eight rebounds for the freshman. Five of her rebounds were offensive, and she had two steals to go along with her nine points, whic hwas also a carrer high.

Brittany Gregorich (Altoona, Altoona) added seven boards.

Katie DeWitt led Northwestern with six points.

Up next for the Falcons is the home opener versus Macalester College on Tuesday. Tip-off is at 7 p.m. The Falcons lead the all time series versus Macalester 13-3.
