Women's Basketball Falls to UW-La Crosse

The women's basketball team fell to UW-La Crosse at the Karges Center on Wednesday, 64-58.

The Falcons were stellar on defense, collecting 14 steals while limiting the Eagles to a mere four.  The Falcons were also able to outrebound La Crosse by a 34-29 ratio.

Maranda Dohrn (Lake City, MN, Lake City) led all rebounders with 11.  She would also finish with seven points and three steals.

Throughout the first half, the game was a well-fought battle with La Crosse leading by as many as seven.  The Falcons only lead of the game came when Tiffany Gregorich (Altoona) opened the game with a basket and then completed the three-point play with a free-throw. Tiffany Gregorich would finish the night tied for the game-high with 16 points. She led all players with a total of five steals.

Dana Churchill of UWL also finished with 16.

Alise Holst (Plainview, MN, Plainview-Elgin-Millville) also had a strong performance, and was the second Falcon in double-digit scoring with 15 on the night. Holst also chipped in eight rebounds.

During the second half, the Falcons were unable to catch the Eagles' strong shooting performance. They would lead by as many as 11 with 12:40 to go in the game and then again with 10:00 remaining.

 UWL finished the evening with a hot 51.2 percent from field goal range, connecting on 22-43 shots.  They also made 7-10 from behind the three-point line.

 The Falcons, while still strong in shooting throughout the night, finished at 37.7 percent from the field goal range, but were only 3-13 for 23.1 percent from the three-point range.

With the loss, the Falcons fall to 15-9 overall and 7-8 in the WIAC.  The Eagles meanwhile, improve to 19-5 overall and 12-3 in the conference.

Up next for the Falcons is an away match against UW-Platteville.  Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 19. The Falcons are 39-23 all time against the Pioneers.  The Falcons beat UWP 71-49 back on Jan. 15 at the Karges Center.

While looking ahead for conference tournament play, the Falcons currently trail UW-Eau Claire by a game for fifth place in the WIAC standings. The Blugolds beat UW-Superior 74-62 on Wednesday. The Falcons are ahead of UW-Oshkosh by a half a game for fifth.  The Titans did not play on Wednesday.
