The women's basketball team used a powerful inside game and strong defense to upset the D3hoops.com No. 11 ranked UW-Whitewater Warhawks 73-69 in overtime on Saturday at the Karges Center.
Leading the way for the Falcons was Taylor House (Maple Grove, MN, Maple Grove) who poured in 19 points, grabbed eight rebounds, and had a career high in assists with five. Her 19 points led all players.
Maranda Dohrn (Lake City, MN, Lake City) was also a powerful presence for the Falcons as they dominated the inside post. Dohrn finished with a double-double, a game-high 19 rebounds and an outstanding 17 points. Her 19 rebounds were a season's best, and were a strong asset to the Falcons victory because as a team, the Falcons outrebounded the Warhawks 53-31. Dohrn was also one of four Falcons scoring in double digits.
Tiffany Gregorich (Altoona, Altoona) had 13 and Alise Holst (Plainview, MN, Plainview-Elgin-Millville) had 12 to highlight the Falcon scoring spree.
The Falcons trailed by as many as 10 in the first half with 2:13 remaining. But Holst went on a tear to shift the momentum back to the Falcons. Holst had a spurt where she scored six points in a row to trim the Warhawk lead down four at the half. From that point on, the most the Falcons would trail by was four with 19:25 to go in the game. The Falcons would use the momentum to build leads by as many as seven with 9:38 to play.
The Warhawks had a chance to win the game 46 seconds remaining, but Chantel Burg missed the second end of her free-throws to leave the game tied at 63-63.
In overtime, the first of the year for either team, the Falcons again took advantage of their strong inside game as House chipped in four and Dohrn two of the 10 points the Falcons would score.
Holst would seal the game for the Falcons by hitting both free-throw shots with six seconds remaining to put the Falcons up 73-69.
As a team, the Falcons greatly improved their shooting, connecting on 27-62 for 43.5 percent. Whitewater meanwhile, only shot 22-61 for 36.1 percent.
Whitewater was ranked No. 16 in UWA Today ESPN Coaches' poll and No. 11 in the D3hoops.com poll.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 15-7 overall and 7-6 in the WIAC.
The loss drops the Warhawks to 16-6 overall and 8-5 in the conference.

The game is set to get underway at 5 p.m. on Saturday Feb. 12 in Stevens Point. The Falcons fell to the Pointers 75-67 back on Dec. 11 at the Karges Center.
