Softball Team Splits in Florida

Falcons Beat St. Ben's, 3-1; Lost to IWU, 7-1

The Falcon softball team split in two games played on Monday afternoon at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla.

The Falcons opened with a 3-1 win over St. Benedict, but then lost a 7-1 decision to Illinois Wesleyan.

On Tuesday the Falcons, now 4-4 overall, play Rutgers-Camden at 1 p.m. (ET) and Millikin at 3 p.m. (ET). Both games will be played at the Osceola County Softball Complex.

River Falls 3, St. Benedict 1
The Falcons scored three runs in the fifth inning to get the win. UWRF had 11 hits and made no errors. CSB scored one run on three hits and they made no errors. St. Benedict scored its run in the fifth.

With one out in the fifth, Patty Olson (Roseville, MN, Roseville) singled to right field and Haley Selkirk (Northfield, MN, Northfield) followed that with a single to left. After a second out, Ashley Goettl (North Mankato, MN, West) singled to left to score both Olson and Selkirk. Katie Zais (Star Prairie, Osceola) pinch ran for Goettl and scored when Shawna Middleton (Hastings, MN, Hastings)singled to right.

Middleton finished 3-3 at the plate. Selkirk was 2-2 while Jessie Bester (Hampton, MN, Randolph)and Hayley Buchanan (Eden Prairie, MN, Eden Prairie) were both 2-3.

Jamie Klein (Elk River, MN, Elk River) went the distance on the mound to get the win. She pitched seven innings and allowed just four hits and one earned run. She struck out three and didn't walk a batter.

Illinois Wesleyan 7, River Falls 1
The Falcons scored just one run on five hits and they committed five errors in the field. IWU scored seven runs on 11 hits and they made three errors.

UWRF scored its run in the fourth while IWU scored twice in the fifth and five times in the sixth.

Olson started the fourth with an infield hit and she went to second on an error. Zais pinch ran for Olson and she later scored on a sacrifice fly to left by Buchanan.

Dana Book (Brooklyn Center, MN, Champlin Park) was the only Falcon with multiple hits – she finished 2-3.

IWU scored two runs in the fifth on one hit and two Falcon errors. They added five sixth inning runs using five hits and three Falcon errors.

Rose Tusa (Roseville, MN, St. Anthony Village)started on the mound and took the loss. She worked five innings and allowed two runs, neither were earned. She struck out six and walked two. Klein worked the last inning and allowed five runs and only one was earned.  Klein struck out two and walked one.
