RIVER FALLS, Wis. — The UW-River Falls softball team wrapped up its 2025 regular season, dropping both games of a doubleheader against No. 17 UW-Whitewater.
The Falcons celebrated senior day, honoring the following graduating student-athletes: Kelly Aultman, Lindsay Duggan, Emily Crowe, and Maddie Koch.
UWRF concluded the season with a record of 19-21 overall and 3-11 in WIAC play.
UW-Whitewater 4, UW-River Falls 3 (8 innings)
After two scoreless innings to start off the game, UW-Whitewater got on the board first with a solo shot to left field by Kiarra Kostroski in the top of the third inning. The Falcons answered back in the bottom of the inning, as an RBI-single by Grace Gardner and an RBI-double by Caitlyn Kressel saw UWRF take a 2-1 lead.
The Falcons' pitching staff kept Whitewater off the board in the ensuing three innings, but the Warhawks evened the game at 1-1 in the top of the seventh with an RBI-single. The tying run forced both teams into extra innings.
In the top of the eighth, UW-Whitewater took a 4-2 lead off a two-RBI double by Dani Peshia. The Falcons scored a run in the bottom of the eighth with an RBI-single by Caitlyn Kressel, but the Warhawks forced a strikeout to end the game with a 4-3 victory for Whitewater.
Kressel led the way for UWRF at the plate with a 2-4 performance, totaling two RBIs. Lindsey Duggan pitched 4.2 innings and allowed one earned run, striking out one batter and allowing only two hits. Brooklyn VanGruensven pitched 3.1 innings and allowed one earned run off three hits, striking out one batter.
UW-Whitewater 9, UW-River Falls 1
After a scoreless first two innings, the Warhawks scored three runs in each of the third and fourth innings, taking a commanding 6-0 lead after four innings. UW-Whitewater totaled 15 hits in the second game of the doubleheader.
The Falcons were limited at the plate through the first six innings, as Whitewater pitcher Rhiann Dick kept UWRF scoreless. River Falls broke through in the bottom of the seventh, as senior Kelly Aultman concluded her career with a triple to left field — Autumn Hughes scored Aultman one at-bat later with a sacrifice bunt.
The Warhawks added one run in the sixth and two in the seventh, capturing a 9-1 victory.
Aultman, Hannah Effertz, and Addi DeMeyer recorded hits for the Falcons.
At the conclusion of the season, Aultman led all Falcons with 52 hits, 38 RBIs, and a .430 batting average. She concludes her career ranking third in the UWRF record book with 46 career doubles, fifth with 20 home runs, fifth with 109 RBIs, eighth with 48 walks, and ninth with a .356 batting average.
