The Falcon softball team snapped a four game losing streak with a split in a pair of games in Florida on Thursday afternoon.
The Falcons opened with a 4-2 loss to Nazareth College, but broke their losing streak with a 4-0 win over Roger Williams in game two.
The Falcons, now 5-7 overall, will play their final two games in Florida on Friday. They play Carthage at 9 a.m., and Rowan at 1 p.m., at the Fortune Road Complex Field 2.
Nazareth 4, River Falls 2
NC scored three unearned runs in the first inning and went on to the win. They also scored a single run in the seventh. UWRF scored single runs in the second and fourth innings. The Falcons scored two runs on five hits and they made one error. Nazareth scored four runs on eight hits and they made one error.
Trailing 3-0, the Falcons got back to within 3-1 in the second.
Amanda Ryder (Menomonie, WI, Menomonie) led off the inning with a walk.
Nicole Lubahn (Wanamingo, MN, Kenyon-Wanamingo) pinch ran for her and with one out, stole second. She advanced to third on a passed ball and later scored when
Sarah Bohlen (Rochester, MN, Mayo) doubled to left. It was Bohlen's second doulble of the season. In the fourth Bohlen accounted for the other Falcon run when she hit a solo homer to left. It was her second homer of the year. Bohlen was the only Falcon to have a multiple hit game. UWRF loaded the bases in the sixth, but couldn't score.
Jamie Klein (Elk River, MN, Elk River) started on the mound and pitched two innings. She allowed three unearned runs and five hits. She struck out three and walked none. She took the loss and is now 3-4 this year. Bohlen pitched the final five innings and was effective in the relief role. She allowed three hits and one unearned run. She walked four and struck out two in her longest action on the mound this year.
River Falls 4, Roger Williams 0
The Falcons got back in the win column by scoring four runs in the top of the seventh to break up a scoreless game. UWRF scored four runs on 10 hits and made one error. RW had just two hits and they made three errors.
Rose Tusa (Roseville, MN, St. Anthony Village) and
Nikki Osmonson (Otsego, MN, Rogers)combined for the shutout. Tusa started and worked the first six innings allowing two hits. She struck out seven and walked two. Osmonson worked the seventh and retired all three batters she faced - two by strike outs. Tusa is now 2-3 this year.
In the seventh
Ashley Goettl (North Mankato, MN, West) hit a three-run homer to left center to break the game open. The homer scored
Haley Selkirk (Northfield, MN, Northfield), who singled to left, and
Hayley Buchanan (Eden Prairie, MN, Eden Prairie), who reached base on a fielder's choice. It was Goettl's second home run of the season.
Dana Book (Brooklyn Center, MN, Champlin Park) scored the other run later in the inning when she scored on a RBI infield out by Tusa.
Selkirk, Goettl, Ryder and Lubahn all had two hits to lead the Falcon offensive attacked.
