The Falcons softball team defeated the Pointers of Hamline University in both games of the double header. The first game the Falcons won 11-3 in six innings. The second UWRF won 11-6.
River Falls 11, Hamline 3
Rose Tusa (Roseville, MN, St. Anthony Village) got the start for the Falcons in the first game and continued to pitch well. In her five innings of work, Tusa gave up six hits and no earned runs. She faced twenty-six batters and struck out four of them. She would get the win in the game.
Tusa and the Falcons got themselves into trouble in the fifth inning. Hamline had the bases loaded with no outs. The score at that time was River Falls four Hamline one. Hayley Buchanan (Eden Prairie, MN, Eden Prairie) made a tremendous catch off a line drive to get the first out of the inning. Tusa would get the next two batters to fly out and end the inning.
Ashley Goettl (North Mankato, MN, West)had two homeruns in the game. Both were solo homeruns, the first coming in the bottom of the fifth inning. The second came in the sixth. Those were Goettl's third and fourth homeruns of the season.
River Falls 11, Hamline 6
The start of the second game went back and fourth. Hamline got the game going by getting on the board in the first inning scoring one run. UWRF answered back in the bottom half of the inning when Hayley Buchanan hit her first homerun of the season, a solo homerun.
Hamline scored again in the second inning making the score 2-1. River Falls answered in the bottom half of the inning again when Jamie Klein (Elk River, MN, Elk River) hit a solo homerun, her first of the season as well.
In the Third the Falcons took control of the game by adding three runs making the score 5-2. UWRF would put five runs on the board in the fourth, three coming of a Goettl homerun. Her fifth of the season and third of the day. Hamline would make a come back in the fifth by scoring three runs and one more in the seventh but it was too little to late.
Sarah Bohlen (Rochester, MN, Mayo) would get the win for the Falcons. Bohlen went four innings gave up one earned run on three hits. Jamie Kline would pitch the late three innings for UWRF. Kline faced 16 batters striking out three.
The next game for the Falcons is Tuesday April 12 against UW- Stout. The game was supposed to be Wednesday but was moved ahead one day due to weather moving in.
The Falcons improve their record to 12-11 on the season.
