The Falcon softball team put an exclmation mark on the regular season by sweeping a WIAC doubleheader over UW-Oshkosh on Tuesday afternoon at Ramer Field.
The Falcons won the first game, 7-1 and took the nightcap, 4-3.
UWRF won the WIAC Championship with a 13-3 record. The Falcons had claimed at least of share of the title by beating UW-Whitewater twice on Sunday, but they clinched the title for themselves with the two wins on Tuesday. UWRF ends its regular season 22-13 overall.
The Falcons end their home season with a perfect 10-0 record. That could prove to be important as the Falcons now host the
WIAC Tournament at Ramer Field this weekend. Ironically the Falcons play Oshkosh at 10 a.m., on Friday in the tourney's first game of the double elimination event. The six team tourney will run Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Ramer Field. At stake is a berth into the NCAA Championship series. The tourney winner will received the WIAC's automatic berth into the Championships.
The WIAC title is the first for the Falcons since the 1994 team won the conference crown.The last time the Falcons played in the NCAA Championship was also in 1994.
River Falls 7, Oshkosh 1
The Falcons exploded for four first inning runs and never looked back in the 7-1 win.
UWRF added three runs in the fifth. The Falcons scored seven runs on eight hits and made one error. UWO scored one run, in the second, on three hits and they made two errors.
Rose Tusa (Roseville, MN, St. Anthony Village) pitched another outstanding game for the Falcons. She worked the first five innings and allowed two hits and one earned run. She struck out six and didn't walk a batter.
Sarah Bohlen (Rochester, MN, Mayo) came in two wrap the game up working the last two frames. She aloowed one hit and struck out one. She didn't walk a batter.
The Falcons sent eight hitters to the plate in the four run first.
Patty Olson (Roseville, MN, Roseville) led off with a walk and went to second on a sacrifice by
Nicole Lubahn (Wanamingo, MN, Kenyon-Wanamingo).
Hayley Buchanan (Eden Prairie, MN, Eden Prairie) walked and
Ashley Goettl (North Mankato, MN, West) lined a double to right to scored Olson.
Amanda Ryder (Menomonie, WI, Menomonie) grounded out to short and that scored Buchanan.
Alyssa Black (Mankato, MN, West) then hit a two-run homer to left. It was her first home run of the season.
In the fifth, Lubahn and Buchanan started the inning with singles. They both advanced a base on a wild pitch. Goettl came up with a big two run single to center to score Lubahn and Buchanan. Later in the inning, Black grounded out and that scored
Abby Spurley (Mineral Point, Iowa-Grant), who had pinch ran for Goettl.
Goettl was 3-3 with a run scored and three RBI. Black finished 1-3 with a run scored and three RBI.
River Falls 4, Oshkosh 3
The Falcons survived a scare in the second game. Leading 4-0 going into the top of the seventh, Oshkosh scored three runs before the threat ended.
UWRF scored four runs on eight hits and made two errors. UWO scored three runs on nine hits and made two errors. UWRF scored single runs in the third nad fifth and two in the sixth.
Shawna Middleton (Hastings, MN, Hastings) led off with a single to center and went to second on a sacrifice by
Dana Book (Brooklyn Center, MN, Champlin Park). After a second out, Lubahn doubled down the left field line to score
Haley Selkirk (Northfield, MN, Northfield) who was running for Middleton.
In the fifth
Jessie Bester (Hampton, MN, Randolph) led off with a infield hit and
Lily Buckley (Menomonie, Menomonie) ran for her. After two outs,
Patty Olson (Roseville, MN, Roseville) singled to left to put runners and first and second.
Emily Olson (Roseville, MN, Roseville) then pinch hit and delivered a line drive single to center that scored Buckley.
In the sixth, Ryder singled to left with one out. Black doubled to right field to put runners at second and third. Both runners came home on a throwing error.
Tusa started on the mound and got the win. She is now 15-6 this year. She worked the first six innings and then worked the final two-thirds of an inning in the seventh. She allowed six hits and no runs. She struck out seven and walked one. Bohlen worked one-third of an inning and allowed three hits and three runs, only one was earned.
