The Pioneers won their third consecutive Homecoming game in front of more than 4,500 spectators at Pioneer Stadium.
On the opening drive,
Alex Adams picked off his WIAC-leading sixth pass of the season in Platteville territory. The Falcons offense could not take advantage of the field possession, going three-and-out.
It was the first of five three-and-outs on the day for the Falcons as they failed to convert their first seven third downs, falling behind 17-0 at halftime.
The Falcons had a few other opportunities, but the Pioneers defense prevailed each time.
Mike Cano intercepted a pass at the UWP 42, before a three-and-out halted the drive. Again in the third quarter, following
Zach Loos blocking a punt, the Falcons took over at the UWP 21-yard-line. A pair of penalties pushed the Falcons backwards before missing a field goal after just three offensive plays.
In all the Falcons were 0-for-5 on third downs on the Pioneer territory, as the Pioneers held onto the ball for nearly 13 minutes longer than the Falcons amassing 26 first downs.
The Pioneers are ranked eighth in the nation in total offense and had another big day with sophomore quarterback Bryce Corrigan setting a career-high with four touchdown passes, while throwing for 377 yards.
His counterpart, Falcon freshman quarterback
Ryan Kusilek completed more than two-thirds of his passes – his 67.6-percent completion percentage is the best of his career. Kusilek finished 23-34 with 137 yards passing.
Matt Woller continues to shine in the absence of
John Wahlstrom as he led the Falcons with 43 receiving yards on six catches.
Nathan Brandt also hauled in six passes for 39 yards. The six catches by Brandt give him 49 on the season and 98 in his career.
Defensively,
Nick Zimmerman had a career-high eight tackles including one for a loss and broke up a pass in the secondary.
Nate Smits and Adams had seven stops apiece.
The Falcons have been shutout for the second time in three games, marking the first time the team has been shut out twice in a season since 1973. It marks the fifth time they have been shut out by the Pioneers – the most by any WIAC school.
Up next, the Falcons head to Stout on Saturday, Oct. 27. The Falcons lost 20-9 to the Blue Devils in the third week of the season in a non-conference game. Kickoff is at 1 p.m., at Nelson Field.
