Women's Hockey Sweeps Concordia, Win 7-1

Mason, Jackson record three points each

Kait Mason (Eagan, MN, Eagan HS) scored 13 seconds into the game and assisted on two other goals as the Falcon women's hockey team defeated Concordia, 7-1, on Saturday afternoon in game two of the weekend doubleheader.

In the first period, the Falcons outshot Concordia, 12-5, and scored four goals including two on the powerplay.

Mason got it started for UWRF just 13 seconds into the game to give the Falcons a very early 1-0 lead. Alyssa Jackson (Cambridge, MN, Cambridge-Isanti HS) was credited with an assist on the goal.

Just over five minutes later, at 5:22 in the first period, Chloe Kinsel (West St. Paul, MN, Cretin-Derham Hall HS) scored her fourth goal of the weekend on the powerplay to put the Falcons up 2-0. Leah Gefroh (Bloomington, MN) recorded an assist.

At 10:29, Allie Olson (Monticello, MN, North Wright County HS) scored her first goal of the season on the powerplay to add to the UWRF lead and make it 3-0. Alice Cranston (River Falls, WI, St. Croix Valley Fusion) and Alyssa Black (Mankato, MN, West HS) assisted on the goal.

Concordia would net their first goal of the weekend, at 17:28, when Michelle Musil scored to cut the Falcon lead to 3-1 at the end of the first period.

In the second period, UWRF outshot Concordia, 11-4, and added three more goals.

Amanda Ryder (Menomonie, WI) would strike first for the Falcons on the powerplay, at 7:32, scoring her third goal of the year. The goal was assisted by Black and Olson and put the Falcons up 4-1.

At 11:50, Crysta Lowell (White Bear Lake, MN, White Bear Lake HS) would extend the Falcon lead to 5-1 on a goal assisted by Kendal Evenson (Roseville, MN, Roseville HS).

Jackson would round out the scoring in the second period for UWRF when she scored with assists from Mason and Dani Buehrer (Lakeville, MN, South HS) to make it a 6-1 Falcon lead at the end of two periods.

In the third, the Falcons outshot Concordia, 20-2, and added one more goal to the final tally.

At 2:58, Brook Story (Warroad, MN, Warroad HS) scored her fifth of the year with assists from Mason and Jackson to make it 7-1 UWRF.

Gillian McDonald (New Brighton, MN, Irondale HS) started the game for the Falcons and stopped eight shots in two periods to earn her third win of the season. Meaghan Wenner (Osseo, MN, North Metro HS) took over in the third period and stopped two shots.

“We played very well today and our powerplay looked great, scoring on three of five chances,” said Head Coach Joe Cranston after the game, “We played solid defensively, giving up just 11 shots, and finished strong in the third period.”

The victory improves UWRF to 7-2-2 overall and 6-2-2 in the NCHA. Concordia falls to 2-9-2 overall and 2-7-2 in the NCHA.

The Falcons will return home to take on Gustavus Adolphus College on Wednesday, Dec. 12 at 7:05 p.m.
