Alise Holst (Plainview, MN, Plainview-Elgin-Millville),
Tiffany Gregorich (Altoona, WI, Altoona) and
Maranda Dohrn (Lake City, MN, Lake City) did everything they could to help spark an improbable comeback. However, they came up just short in a 70-60 loss to UW-Stevens Point in the WIAC Semifinals in Stevens Point.
After being down by 14 about halfway through the second half, those seniors came up with big plays and clutch shots to tie the game at 54 with 6:58 remaining. However, the Pointers would go on a late 7-0 run to close out the game and leave the Falcons' season up to chance.
Holst led the Falcons with 14 points and six assists. She also led the Falcons with four of the team's nine steals.
After having only two points in the first half,
Tiffany Gregorich showed her senior leadership by sparking the Falcon surge in the second half. During a 10-0 run by UWRF, T. Gregorich had six of the 10 points, including a three-point play to tie the game at 54. She finished the game with 12 points, 10 of which came in the second half.
Dohrn helped to give the Falcons a 33-30 rebounding advantage over the Pointers. Dohrn had a game-leading nine rebounds to go along with12 points, coming up just shy of a double-double.
Nikki Guhr (Muskego, WI, Muskego) and
Brittany Gregorich (Altoona, WI, Altoona) added nine points apiece of the Falcons who have now been in the WIAC semifinals for two years in a row. The Falcons have never won a WIAC semifinal game.
In the end, hot shooting by UWSP was enough to end the Falcons' WIAC run. UWSP shot 54.7 percent from the field, compared to UWRF's 40 percent. The Falcons also struggled from behind the arc, converting 3-19 for 15.8 percent. UWSP was 4-11 for 36.4 percent.
The Falcons will now wait and see if they receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Falcons have an impressive resume as they are coming off their first 20-win season since 1989. They have also been ranked in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches Poll the entire season. This week, the Falcons are currently ranked No. 20. They are also ranked No. 21 in the D3Hoops.com poll.
The Falcons are now 21-6 overall. They will wait word on the NCAA Tournament, which is set to start on March 2.
UWSP will advance to the WIAC Championship game where they will take on UW-Whitewater with the winner receiving an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.
