Box Score The women's basketball team edged UW-Superior 64-62 in a WIAC contest at Superior behind five different Falcons scoring in double-digits.
Alise Holst (Plainview, MN, Plainview-Elgin-Millville) led the offensive charge. She had 15 points and two steals to help extend the Falcons' win streak to four.
Maranda Dohrn (Lake City, MN, Lake City) cleaned up the glass with 13 boards. She also had 11 points for her seventh double-double of the season. She is now averaging 11.2 rebounds per game. UWRF outrebounded UWS 36-26.
Nikki Guhr (Muskego, WI, Muskego) added 12 points on 4-7 shooting from the field. She was also 4-4 from the charity stripe. As a team, the Falcons were a stellar 14-16 from the line for 87.5 percent. UWS was 13-17 for 76.5 percent.
As a team, the Falcons were tenacious on defense, forcing 13 steals, four of which came from
Brittany Gregorich (Altoona, WI, Altoona). UWRF won the turnover battle 16-13, which helped them close the game out victorious. As a team the Falcons scored 18 points from those turnovers. B Gregorich also added 11 points and five rebounds on the night.
Tiffany Gregorich (Altoona, WI, Altoona) was the final Falcon to reach double-digits. She added 10 points along with three assists. Her three assists led UWRF.
The game was a back-and-forth contest throughout the entire game. The largest lead for the Falcons was 10, with 8:47 remaining. The Falcons maintained a steady lead, and with 2:12 to go, led by eight. However, the Yellowjackets would trim the lead down to two with 44 seconds remaining. However, they could not convert at the end, which gave the Falcons the two-point victory.
Superior did shoot a bit better than the Falcons from the field. UWS was 21-49 for 42.9 percent, while the Falcons were 22-57 for 38.6 percent.
With the victory, the Falcons improve to 18-4 overall and 10-3 in the WIAC. Superior meanwhile, falls to 10-12 overall. They are 4-10 in conference play.
The victory also marks a season sweep of the Yellowjackets for UWRF. On Jan. 18 UWRF defeated UWS 65-44 at the Karges Center.
Up next for the Falcons is a home contest against UW-Oshkosh. Action is set to get underway at 3 p.m. at the Karges Center.
The Falcons will also be looking for the sweep of Oshkosh, as on Dec. 10 the Falcons beat UWO 71-44.
During the Oshkosh game, the men's and women's basketball teams will be hosting a Play4Kay event .
Play4Kay is an event where the Kay Yow Cancer Fund, the Women's Basketball Coaches Association and the V Foundation partner together to help find a cure for women's cancers by raising money to help pay for scientific research. Kay Yow was the former North Carolina State University head women's basketball coach. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987 and passed away in 2009.
Beginning the week before this year's event at UWRF, there will be pink t-shirts sold for $10 in support of the event. Everyone in attendance is highly encouraged to wear pink. On the day of the event, there will be a table in the lobby where donations will be collected and t-shirts will be sold. In addition, anyone can donate online at www.play4kay.org/uwrf. All proceeds of the fundraising go straight to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.
Admission for adults is $8, senior citizens $4 and UWRF students with an ID get in for free.
