Softball Team Ends Florida Trip With Two Loses

Falcons Shutout in Both Games

The Falcon softball team's strong hitting took a day off as UWRF was shutout in two games on Friday at the Rebel Spring Games in Orlando, Fla.

The Falcons managed just seven hits in the two games - four against Illinois Wesleyan in a 6-0 loss, and three against Southwestern in another 6-0 loss. The Falcons entered the day with s six-game winning streak.

The Falcons, now 8-5 overall, will next play at the Augustana, Ill., College Tournament on March 31 and April 1. On March 31 the Falcons play Gustavus Adolphus at 10 a.m., and Augustana at noon. Earlier this year the Falcons lost to Gustavus, 3-1, in the Rochester Dome on Feb. 26.

Illinois Wesleyan 6, River Falls 0
The Falcons were shutout for the first time this year in the loss to IWU. UWRF had just four hits - all singles. Hayley Buchanan (1-3), Amanda Ryder (1-2), Danielle Lagerstrom (1-1) and Lily Buckley (1-3) had the Falcon hits.

In the first both Buchanan and Ryder got infield hits, but the next three Falcons went out to end the inning. Buckley singled to right in the fifth and went to second on a passed ball, but that's as far as she was able to advance. In the seventh, Lagerstrom pinch hit and singled to center and Abby Spurley pinch ran for her and went to second on a wild pitch. But again the Falcons could not advance the runner any farther. The IWU pitcher struck out 15 Falcons in the seven inning contest.

Sarah Bohlen started on the mound and worked 4.1 innings. She took the loss and is now 1-1 this year. She allowed six hits and four runs - two were earned. Rose Tusa worked the last 1.2 innings and allowed two hits and two unearned runs. She struck out two.

IWU scored single runs in the first and third and added four runs in the fifth. They scored the four runs in the fifth on four hits and two Falcon errors.

Southwestern 6, River Falls 0
On Wednesday the Falcons beat Southwestern, 3-0 and had six hits in that game and did not have an error. Today the Falcons managed just three hits and had one error. The Pirates finished with 10 hits and they had one error. They scored single runs in the second, fourth and seventh innings and scored three times in the sixth.

Jamie Klein led off the Falcon third with a single to center. Kristy Martinson pinch ran and she went to second on a passed ball. She reached third on an infield out but was stranded there.

The other two Falcon hits came in the seventh. Ashley Goettl led off with a single to left and Bohlen followed that with a single to left to put runners on first and second with no outs. But the next three Falcon batters went out to end the threat and the game.

Tusa started on the mound and took the loss - she is now 5-3. She pitched 5.1 innings and allowed six hits. She allowed four runs and three were earned. She struck out five and didn't walk a batter. Morris pitched the last 1.2 innings and allowed four hits. She allowed two earned runs, struck out one and walked one.
