Softball Team Splits With St. Thomas

Falcons Win First Game, 6-2; Lose Nightcap, 5-4 in Eight Innings

The Falcon softball team split a doubleheader with No. 14 ranked St. Thomas on Sunday in games played at the Rosemount Dome.

The Falcons, ranked No. 23 in the country, won the first game, 6-2, but lose the second game, 5-4, in eight innings.

The Falcons, now 2-2 overall, will next travel to Florida where they have 10 games scheduled next week. On Sunday the Falcons play Illinois Wesleyan and Mount St. Joseph.

River Falls 6, St. Thomas 2
The Falcons scored six runs on 13 hits to get the win in the first game. They scored two runs in the third, fourth and seventh innings. Hayley Buchanan had the hot bat for the Falcons. She finished 4-4 with two runs scored and one RBI. Ashley Goettl, who was 1-4, had two RBI. Patty Olson was 1-4 and she scored twice.

St. Thomas scored a single run in the second and sixth innings.

Rose Tusa pitched six innings to get the win. She allowed six hits and two earned runs. She struck out seven and didn't walk a batter. She retired 12 straight batters during the middle innings. Jamie Klein worked the seventh inning. She allowed two hits and struck out one.

St. Thomas 5, River Falls 4 (8 innings)

The Falcons finished game two with four runs on on eight hits, but made two errors. UST scored five runs on 12 hits and made no errors.

UWRF scored twice in the second and single runs in the fifth and seventh innings. UST scored twice in the third and sixth innings and the winning run in the eighth.

Sarah Bohlen hit a two-run homer to left to give the Falcons a 2-0 lead at the time. She finished 1-2 in the game with two runs scored and the two RBI. Olson had a multiple hit game going 2-4 and she had two RBI. Olson singled home Bohlen with a hit to right in the fifth. UWRF tied the game with a run in the bottom of the seventh. Jamie Klein led off with a double to center and she advanced to third on an infield out. Olson then singled to center to score Klein with the tying run.

UST scored the winning run, it was unearned, using two hits and one Falcon error in the eighth.

The Falcons used four pitchers in the game. Bohlen started and worked the first four innings and allowed eight hits and two earned runs. She struck out one and didn't walk a batter. Abbie Morris worked 1.1 innings and allowed two runs, one was earned. She walked three and struck out one. Klein took the loss working the eighth inning. She allowed two hits and the one unearned run.

"Playing against a team as talented as St. Thomas gives us a good guage for what we need to work on to compete at the national level," said Falcon Coach Faye Perkins after the game. "Our hitting was strong, but there were a few things defensively that we need to improve on to be consistently competitive against nationally ranked teams. These four games were great preperation for our Florida trip."
