Softball Team Wins Twice at Augustana Tourney on Sunday

Tusa Sets Career Strike Out Record

Rose Tusa set the Falcon career strike out record and UWRF won two games on Sunday at the Augustana Tournament held in Moline, Ill., on Sunday.

Tusa recorded six strike outs in the first game, but she needed just one to set the record. Tusa struck out a St. Norbert batter in the first inning to set the record. She now has 586 strike outs in her four-year career. She broke the record held by current Falcon pitching coach, Ashley Bertrand, of 572 set during her career from 2005-08.

The Falcons beat St. Norbert, 6-5, and then topped Cornell, 4-0, to finish 3-1 at the tourney.

The Falcons, now 11-6 overall, open WIAC play on Wednesday when they host UE-Eau Claire at 3 p.m., at Ramer Field.

The Falcons scored all of their runs in the third innings. UWRF scored six runs on seven hits and made three errors. SNC scored five runs on five hits and they made one error. Trailing 6-0, the Green Knights made it a game by scoring four times in the fourth and one in the fifith.

UWRF scored its six runs in the fourth on four hits and one SNC error. The big blow in the inning was a three-run homer to right-center by Ashley Goettl. Amanda Ryder doubled home two runs and Jessie Bester scored the other run with a single to left.

Ryder was 2-2 in the game while Hayley Selkirk was 2-3.

SNC scored its four runs in the fourth on four hits and one Falcon error.

Tusa pitched the first three innings without allowing a hit or a base runner. Jamie Klein started the fourth inning and allowed four hits. She allowed four runs, two were earned. Klein walked one and struck out one. Abbie Morris pitched the fifth inning and allowed one unearned run on one hit. She walked one and struck out one. Tusa re-entered the game in the sixth and worked the final two inningsand faced seven hitters - one reached first on an error. For the game she worked five innings and did not allow a hit or run. She didn't walk a batter.


River Falls 4, Cornell 0
Tusa threw a four-hit shutout in the team's 4-0 win against Cornell. The right-hander pitched all seven innings and allowed just the four hits - three were singles and she allowed one double. Once again she did not walk a batter and she struck out eight to improve to 8-3 this year.

The Falcons scored four runs on seven hits and they did not make an error. UWRF scored a single run in the third and three in the sixth.

In the third Buchanan led off the inning with a double to right center and she went to third on a wild pitch. After an out, Bester laid down a bunt on a suicide squeeze play that scored Buchanan. In the sixth, Selkirk led off with a single to center and she was sacrificed to second by Klein. Lily Buckley singled through the left side and Selkirk went to third. Amber O'Connor pinch hit and singled down the left field line to score Selkirk. Buchanan then singled to center to load the bases. After a second out, Bester singled to score both O'Connoll and Buchanan.

Buchanan finished 2-3 in the game and scored one run.
