Box Score 2 The Falcon softball team swept a WIAC doubleheader against UW-Superior on Saturday afternoon at Ramer Field without allowing a run.
The Falcons won the first game, 10-0 in five innings and then took the nightcap, 4-0.
The Falcons, now 19-8 overall and 4-2 in the WIAC, will next play a WIAC doubleheader at Stout on Wednesday with action starting at 4 p.m. The Falcons go to Stout on a seven-game winning streak.
River Falls 10, Superior 0
Rose Tusa and
Abbie Morris combined to pitch a two-hitter in the 10-0 first game win.
Tusa started and worked the first four innings of the five-inning contest. She retired the first nine batters she faced. In the she allowed two infield hits and she walked a batter to load the bases with one out. But she got the next batter to strike out swinging and then the next batter fouled out to end the threat and the inning. Tusa struck out five and walked one. Morris pitched the fifth inning and retired the side in order. She struck out one.
The Falcons scored in every inning. They scored four times in the first and fourth innings and one run in the second and third frames. UWRF finished with 11 hits and played errorless ball in the field. This was the fifth game the Falcons had double figures in hits.
In the first
Patty Olson singled home
Nicole Lubahn who reached first on an infield single.
Ashley Goettl then hit her ninth homer of the season to straight away center field.
Amanda Ryder followed Goettl with a solo homer to left. It was Ryder's first round tripped of the season.
In the second
Hayley Buchanan singled to left center with one out. After a second out, Buchanan stole second and then scored when Olson singled to center. In the third Ryder led off with a single to right and
Abby Spurley pinch ran.
Jessi Bester singled to short and both runners advanced a base when
Haley Selkirk put down a sacrifice bunt.
Sarah Bohlen was intentionally walked to load the bases.
Lily Buckley then hit a sacrifice fly to left to score Spurley.
In the fourth the Falcons scored four runs on three hits and one Superior error. Olson hit a homer to left field to score Lubahn. It was Olson's fourth homer of the season. Goettl walked and Ryder singled to right. Goettl advanced to third on the hit and Ryder went to second on the throw. Bester then singled to right to score Goettl and
Katie Zais who pinch ran for Ryder.
Olson finished 3-3 with four RBI and a run scored and Goettl was 1-2 with two runs scored and two RBI. Ryder was also 3-3 with a run scored and a RBI and Bester was 2-3 with two RBI.
River Falls 4, Superior 0
The Falcons scored once in the first and second innings and twice in the fourth to get the win. UWRF finished the game with seven hits and they did not have an error.
In the first, Buchanan led off with a single to center and she was sacrificed to second by Lubahn. Olson walked and Goettl knocked Buchanan home with a single to right. UWRF scored with two outs in the second. Selkirk reached first on an infield single and stole second. Buchanan then singled to left and purposely got caught in a run down. Selkirk scored before Buchanan was tagged out.
The Falcons scored two runs on three hits in the fourth. With one out
Jamie Klein singled to left and Christy Martinson pinch ran. Buckley followed that with a single to right. After a second out, Buchanan walked to load the bases. Ryder came in to pinch hit and she delivered a two-run single to center to score Martinson and Buckley.
Tusa went the distance on the mound to get her second win of the day - she is now 13-4. She allowed five hits. She walked one and struck out five. This was her fourth shutout of the season and her seventh complete game.
Buchanan was 2-2 with a run scored. Ryder had two RBI and Goettl, who was 1-3, had the other RBI.
