Softball Team Loses WIAC Doubleheader at Oshkosh

Titans Win, 3-2, 8-7; Both Games go 9 Innings

The Falcon softball team lost a WIAC doubleheader at UW-Oshkosh on Saturday afternoon with both games going nine innings.

The Titans won the first game, 3-2, and took the nightcap, 8-7. This is the first time the Falcons have been swept in a doubleheader since April 18, 2010. UW-La Crosse beat the Falcons twice that day, 4-3 in nine innings, and 4-1.

On Sunday the Falcons, now 20-11 overall and 5-5 in the WIAC, play at UW-Whitewater in another WIAC doubleheader that starts at noon. UWW is ranked No. 15 in this week's NFCA Coaches poll. The Warhawks, 25-5 overall, are 8-0 and in first place in the WIAC standings.

Oshkosh 3, River Falls 2
Oshkosh scored an unearned run in the ninth ining to get the extra-inning win in the first game.

Oshkosh scored three runs on eight hits and they made one error. UWRF scored two runs on 10 hits and they made one error.

Oshkosh scored single runs in the second and fifth innings. The Titans used a walk and a double to score in the second, and a double and a single to score in the fifth.

The Falcons tied the game with two runs in the top of the seventh. UWRF loaded the bases when Haley Selkirk walked and Amber O'Connell and Sarah Bohlen both singled. The Falcons then hit into a double play, but there were still runners on second and third. Hayley Buchanan then came through with a single up the middle to score both O'Connell and Bohlen.

UWRF had runners on second and third with two outs in the eighth but couldn't score. UWO put a runner on third with two outs and also could not score.In the ninth the Falcons again had runners on second and third with two ous but couldn't score. Oshkosh scored the unearned, winning run in the ninth using a Falcon error and a double.

Buchanan, who had both RBI for the Falcons, and Patty Olson were both 2-5 at the plate and Amanda Ryder finished 2-4.

Abbie Morris picked up the loss. It was her first loss of the season and she is now 4-1. She worked 3.2 innings and allowed the one unearned run and just two hits. She struck out three and walked one. Rose Tusa pitched the first five innings and allowed two earned run on six hits. She walked two and struck out four.

UWO scored six of its runs in the second inning to erase a 2-0 Falcon lead, and then scored in the ninth to get the win.

UWRF scored single runs in the first and second innings to take a 2-0 lead. In the first Buchanan reached first on a single to left and stole second. She later scored on an error. In the second the Falcons loaded the bases when Jessie Bester reached on an error, O'Connell singled to center and Bohlen singled to right. After a force out at home, Buchanan reached on an infield single that scored O'Connell.

UWO's six-run second was highlighted by four hits - all singles, a wild pitch that scored a run and a walk.

The Falcons battled back in the seventh scoring five runs to take a 7-6 lead. Jamie Klein led off the inning with a solo homer to right center. It was her first homer of the season. Buchanan and Selkirk both reached on errors and Olson scored Buchanan with a single up the middle. An infield out advanced Olson to second and Selkirk to third. Ryder was intentionally walked to load the bases. Selkirk was then put out at home on a fielder's choice, but the bases were still loaded with two outs. O'Connell then tripled to right center to score Olson, Ryder and Bester to give the Falcons the lead.

But in the Titan half of the seventh, Tess Fadness hit a solo homer to center with two outs to tie the game, 7-7.

In the eighth, UWRF advanced a runner as far as second but couldn't score. UWO had a runner on third, but they could not get the run home either.

In the ninth, the Falcons got a base runner with a walk, but the inning ended when UWRF hit into a double play. UWO loaded the bases in its half of the ninth and scored the winning run when Julie Sweeny singled to left to score the winning run.

Buchanan finished 3-5 at the plate with one RBI and she scored twice. O'Connell was 2-4 with three RBI and a run scored. UWRF scored seven runs on eight hits and did not make an error, UW scored eight runs on 15 hits and they made seven errors.

Bohlen started on the mound and pitched the first 1.1 innings. She allowed four earned runs on four hits. Tusa worked 3.2 innings and allowed two earned runs on six hits. She struck out three and walked one. Morris worked the final four innings and took the loss - she is now 4-2. She allowed two runs and five hits and struck out one.
