Women's Basketball Comes up Short in Loss to Carroll

Mehus Scores Career-High 18 Points

The UWRF women's basketball team came up short in the second game of the season against Carroll College, 61-66, Saturday afternoon in the Zorn Arena at the UW-Eau Claire Tip-off Classic.

Carroll was able to take an early lead in the game 18-9, with 12:32 left in the first half. Carroll was able to continue leading by 8-15 points throughout the remainder of the half. The Falcons trailed but were able to put up four more points in five seconds, with 4:07 to play. Carroll led, 40-25, at the halftme.

The second half showed a return of the Falcons when they went on a 6-0 streak with about 10 minutes left in the game. The Falcons were able to narrow the lead that Carroll had on them into the single digits, but Carroll was able to hold onto the lead to win the game.

The Falcons scored 32 points in the paint during the game, and had 22 bench points.

Richell Mehus led the Falcons in scoring with an impressive 18 points, which was a career high. She also led the team in steals with five. Mehus and Tess Lueders led the Falcons in rebounds with five and nine, respectively. Overall UWRF shot 21-61 (.344) from the field, and 4-14 (.286) behind the three point line. Mirroring their percentage of free throws made from the night before, UWRF made 15-24 (.625).

Carroll was led in scoring by Emily Denoyer who put up 17 points with two rebounds and two steals. Corrine Engels also scored in the double digits with 16 points, and six rebounds.

The Falcons, 0-2 overall, return to the court on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m., with a game at Gustavus Adolphus College.
