Women's Basketball Opens WIAC Play With Win - Audio, Video Added

Falcons Top La Crosse, 59-56

The Falcon women's basketball team played its best game of the season in beating UW-La Crosse, 59-56, in the first WIAC game of the season on Wednesday night at the Karges Center.

The Falcons took the early lead in the first half, however the Eagles were able to come back and tie the score 4-4, with 16:33 left to play. From there the teams traded the lead, until La Crosse's Rachel Atchison made a 3-pointer making the score 13-10, with 11:18 left to play. La Crosse held the lead for the rest of the half, ending with a 19-13 advantage.

The second half started with La Crosse maintaining the lead until Falcon Katie Messman made a 3-pointer giving the Falcons the lead, 42-41, with 6:53 left in the game. The teams mirrored the first half and traded leads for the next four minutes.

With 2:12 left the Falcons took the lead for good when Richell Mehus made one of two free throws to give her team a 54-43 lead. The Falcons went on a 7-0 run before and after that to take control of the game. Hear WRFW's Bryan Tester and Ryan Tibbits on the call of a Mehus 3-pointer.

Mehus led the Falcons in scoring, with 16 points. She also led the team with nine rebounds. Hailey Siegle also added to the score with nine points, and she had four rebounds. Tess Lueders, who scored eight points, had eight rebounds.

The Eagles were led in scoring by Atchison who had 12 points, and Jenna Anderson who had 11.

The Falcons, 1-5 overall and 1-0 in the WIAC, return to the court Saturday at 7 p.m., at UW-Platteville.
