Women’s Basketball Routs UW-La Crosse

Box Score

RIVER FALLS, Wis. (uwrfsports.com)- To say that the UW-River Falls women's basketball team displayed an offensive masterpiece on Wednesday would be an understatement. The 18th ranked Falcons (15-3, 6-1 WIAC) had five players score in double-digit points on its way to an impressive 95-64 victory over the UW-La Crosse Eagles.

In the process, the Falcons kept pace with UW-Oshkosh and UW-Stevens Point for first place in the WIAC. All three teams ended the night with a 6-1 record in WIAC play.

The starting five of Brynn Liljander, Richell Mehus, Kate Theisen, Taylor Karge, and Katie Messman scored 70 of the 95 points for the Falcons.

The Falcons used an 18-6 run to start the first quarter to take firm control of the game. During that stretch, all five starters scored at least two points to contribute to the early run. The closest that the Eagles could get to the Falcons was when they made a layup to cut the Falcons lead to 24-15 at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter began just like the first quarter. UWRF began the second quarter on a 16-2 run to take an even firmer grip on the game. Once again, it was a bevvy of players that contributed to the run. Kate Theisen, Taylor Karge, Brynn Liljander, Katie Messman and Cassy Saxton all scored at least two points during the Falcons' 16-2 run.

When halftime commenced, the Falcons held a 53-25 lead over the Eagles.

To start the third quarter, the Falcons padded their lead even more. Just like she began the second quarter, Kate Theisen began the third quarter with a layup. Brynn Liljander followed that with a layup of her own and a three-point basket.

By the middle of the third quarter, the outcome of the game had already been decided due to the Falcons offensive prowess in the previous two-and-a-half quarters. At the end of the third quarter, the Falcons held a 76-44 lead.

The fourth quarter began with three of the five starters on the bench. Hannah Pignato, Mikaela Wilson, and Hayley Rau started the fourth quarter along with Kate Theisen and Brynn Liljander.

Even though the majority of the starting lineup did not see the court in the fourth quarter, the offensive production did not drop off. Hayley Rau and Hannah Pignato scored eight of the first 10 points scored by the Falcons in the fourth quarter.

When the final buzzer sounded, the Falcons found themselves on the positive side of a 95-64 final score.

The 95 points that the Falcons scored against the Eagles is their highest scoring total of the 2015-2016 season.
Brynn Liljander paced the Falcons by scoring 21 points and gathering four rebounds. Kate Theisen was second on the team with 15 points. Katie Messman and Taylor Karge scored 12 points apiece. Karge led the Falcons with six rebounds. Richell Mehus tallied 10 points, dished out five assists, and gathered five rebounds.

Hayley Rau and Cassy Saxton each contributed seven points off of the bench.

The Falcons are back in action on Saturday, Jan. 30 when they travel to UW-Whitewater to square off against the Warhawks. The tipoff is set for 3 p.m.
