MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The No. 4-ranked UW-River Falls women's hockey team won a special teams battle at Augsburg University Thursday evening, rallying from a two-goal deficit and prevailing 5-4 in overtime.
The Falcons and Auggies combined for 28 minutes in the box with seven penalties each. Only four of the nine total goals were even strength, with each team scoring two power play goals along with UWRF adding one shorthanded.
After the home team opened the scoring early into the contest, the Falcons and Auggies traded power play goals and Augsburg led 2-1 heading into the first intermission.
Alex Hantge scored her second goal of the season during the Falcons' first power play opportunity, assisted by
Callie Hoff and
Kora Torkelson.
Augsburg took a 3-1 lead on its first power play chance in the second period. The Falcons then killed off two more Auggie power plays until scoring another of their own,
Abigail Stow's first of two goals at 18:29, with Hoff and Torkelson picking up their second assists of the game.
While on the penalty kill again in the third period, UWRF tied the game at 3-3, as
Erin Olson buried a breakaway shorthanded goal, just under six minutes into the final stanza.
The home team took back its lead near the midway point of the period, but the Falcons responded quickly with a goal by Alsyon Niebur, assisted by Olson and
Emma Schmitz, leading to overtime knottied at 4-4.
1:33 into the 3-on-3 overtime period, a breakout pass from
Maddie McCollins found the tape of Stow, who went backhand past Auggie netminder Chloe Stockinger for the game-winner.
UWRF out-shot Augsburg 34-20.
Sami Miller made 16 saves to earn the win in goal, improving her record to 2-0.
UW-River Falls continues nonconference play on the road this Saturday, Nov. 6 at Saint Mary's University.
