No. 5 Falcons win 6-5 at home to sweep No. 6 Gusties

RIVER FALLS, Wis. – The No. 5-ranked UW-River Falls women's hockey team swept No. 6-ranked Gustavus Adolphus College with a 6-5 win over the Gusties Saturday afternoon at Hunt Arena.

Each team scored a pair of power play goals, along with the Falcons' seventh shorthanded goal of the season. UWRF, now 10-1 overall, also scored six on Wednesday, Dec. 8 during a 6-3 win at Gustavus in Saint Peter, Minn.

Fifth-year senior forwards Callie Hoff (2g-2a) and Kora Torkelson (3 assists) led the offense, along with Challis Prohaska's first collegiate goal standing as the game-winner.

It took the Falcons just six and a half minutes to claim a two-goal lead. Alyson Niebur finished off an outlet pass from Erin Olson to open the game's scoring before Hoff scored her third shorthanded goal of the year.

The Gusties cut the UWRF lead in half at 8:50 of the first period and the home team led 2-1 heading into the middle stanza.

A busy second period was filled with four goals, three from Gustavus including two on the power play.

On a Falcon power play, Abigail Stow scored her fifth goal of the season to cut the GAC lead to 4-3.

UWRF drew a penalty late in the second period and tied the game at 4-4 early in the third, scoring 45 seconds into the period with Hoff's ninth goal and fourth power play goal on the season.

Alex Hantge gave the Falcons back the lead at 5:56, putting home a pass from Hoff. At 11:29 of the third, a wheeling Stow behind the net found Prohaska open at the point and her wrist shot beat the Gustie netminder for the eventual game-winner.

GAC scored with two and half minutes left in regulation to cut the Falcon lead to 6-5 and had chances with an extra attacker, but couldn't break through UWRF goalie Sami Miller and the Falcon defense.

Miller made 23 saves in net to earn the win, improving her record to 6-1.

UW-River Falls returns from its holiday break with a non-conference series versus Concordia College Jan. 7-8 at Hunt Arena.
