PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The No. 6-ranked UW-River Falls women's hockey team defeated No. 3-ranked Plattsburgh State 3-2 Saturday afternoon in the opening game of the Cardinal/Panther Classic.
The Falcons, now 7-1 overall, will face the winner of No. 1-ranked Middlebury College and No. 4-ranked Elmira College tomorrow at 5 p.m. (Eastern Standard Time).
UWRF scored a goal in each period, including
Aubrey Nelvin's game-winner just under seven minutes of the final frame, assisted by her linemates
Abigail Stow and
Alex Hantge.
Bailey Olson got the scoring started at 7:33 of the first, notching her fourth of the season with help from
Kailey Niccum and
MaKenna Aure, and the Falcons led 1-0 through 20 minutes.
In the middle frame, the home team scored twice to claim a 2-1 advantage before
Maddie McCollins tied up the game with just 10 seconds left in the period, tying the game at two apiece heading into the third.
The Cardinals held the Falcons to just four shots on goal in the final 20 minutes despite UWRF converting with Nelvin's game-winner.
Sami Miller turned aside seven shots in the final 20 and finished with 24 to earn the win.
Plattsburgh State held a 26-24 edge in shots on goal. Each team went unsuccessful on the power play.
