Warhawks down the Falcons, 75-60

RIVER FALLS, Wis. – The UW-River Falls men's basketball team fell 75-60 to UW-Whitewater Saturday afternoon at Page Arena.

UWRF drops to 3-4 overall and 0-2 in the WIAC, while the Warhawks improve to 5-3 overall and 1-1 during conference action.

The Falcons and Warhawks totaled a combined 25 fouls in the first half alone, adding 20 more in the second half. UWRF held the Warhawks to under 40 percent shooting from the field in the first half while shooting 12-of-27 and 9-of-10 at the free throw line.

Rodrick Payne led the Falcons with 15 points, followed by a season-high 14 points from Garret Honstrom, who was 8-for-9 at the charity stripe. UWRF held a 39-29 edge in rebounds, led by Jack Leifker who collected six.

After some early lead changes, the Falcons made five straight and led 18-9 just over five minutes in, and preserved their lead for the rest of the half. UWRF led by as many as 11 twice. 

UWW opened the second half on a 16-4 run through the first six minutes to earn a nine-point lead and didn't look back, maintaining a lead for the remainder of regulation.

The Falcons came within one point of the Warhawks on three occasions, including a Marshall Holland triple to trim the UWW lead to 59-58 with 4:16 left in the game. The visitors then held the Falcons to just one more made field goal in the last four minutes to run away with the win.

UWW forced 20 Falcon turnovers, converting those into 30 points. UWRF led 30-20 in the paint.

The Falcons have a pair of nonconference games next week, starting on Wednesday at Viterbo University.
