Falcons host Blugolds in WIAC O'Brien Cup Championship

RIVER FALLS, Wis. - The WIAC top-seeded and No. 4-ranked UW-River Falls women's hockey team hosts the No. 2 seed and No. 5-ranked UW-Eau Claire this Saturday, March 5, at Hunt Arena.

ALL INDIVIDUALS REGARDLESS OF VACCINATION STATUS ARE EXPECTED TO WEAR A FACE COVERING INSIDE THE FALCON CENTER.

THE SERIES
  • Saturday's game marks the 90th all-time meeting between UW-River Falls and UW-Eau Claire, with the Falcons holding a 62-16-11 series advantage.
  • The two teams previously met Feb. 18-19, with UWRF sweeping the weekend series with 4-1 and 2-0 victories. Sami Miller started both games in net and totaled 45 saves with a .978 save percentage, and was named the WIAC Women's Hockey Player of the Week.
  • During the WIAC Tournament since its inception in 2014, either UW-River Falls and UW-Eau Claire have won each year, with six titles for the Falcons and a pair for the Blugolds.
    • UWRF maintains a 9-3-1 series lead against UWEC during the WIAC Tournament, having met in five of the eight WIAC O'Brien Cup Championships.
WIAC O'BRIEN CUP HISTORY
  • The Falcons own an overall record of 23-3-2 during the WIAC Tournament and have won six O'Brien Cup titles since 2014.
  • UWRF won the 2021-22 WIAC Regular Season Championship with a series sweep over UW-Eau Claire, granting the Falcons the top seed for the postseason playoffs.

  • UWRF is ranked fourth nationally by USCHO.com for the eighth consecutive week, followed by WIAC foe UW-Eau Claire at No. 5.

  • Senior forwards Callie Hoff and Abigail Stow rank first and second in the nation, respectively, with 1.52 and 1.38 assists per game.
  • Callie Hoff, a fifth-year senior forward from Hermantown, Minn., became the UW-River Falls women's hockey all-time leading scorer with her 169th career point on Feb. 1 versus Augsburg University.
  • UWRF leads DIII with 13 shorthanded goals and broke an NCAA DIII single-game record with four shorthanded goals at the College of Saint Benedict on Feb. 8.
  • UWRF's .341 power play percentage is second best in Division III.
    • The Falcons scored power play goals in eight consecutive games from Jan. 16-Feb. 8.
  • UWRF has outscored opponents 149-30 (2nd/DIII) this season, averaging 5.7 goals per game.
  • This season, UWRF has broken program single-season team record in goals (149), assists (230), points (379), shorthanded goals (13), and shutouts (12).
