Falcons Find Their Footing

After a loaded September schedule, UWRF Esports got off to a hot start in October with a string of quality wins in four different leagues last week.

UWRF Valorant lost 1-2 in a close back-and-forth series to UW-Eau Claire in NECC action on Monday. The team, anchored by captain Jeremy Myers, bounced back with a decisive 2-0 victory over UW-Whitewater in the 2nd round of the WVAC Fall Qualifier. Winning 13-2 on both maps, Sophomore Alex Krueger recorded a team-high 38/15/13 kill-death-assist (KDA) ratio on the night. The Falcons struggled to maintain that momentum throughout the rest of the week, falling to Butler, Grand Valley State, and UW-Madison. They play their final qualifying match for WVAC on Tuesday, 10/10 against Wisconsin Lutheran College. A bid to the official invitational is on the line.

Tuesday, 10/3 was a clean sweep across the board for the Falcons. In 3 different leagues, UWRF Esports went 5-0 with a map score of 12-1 in those matches. In NACE, Overwatch F1, featuring North American Top 500 player Maple Wiggins, defeated DePaul 3-1 while Overwatch F2 swept Ferris State in dominating fashion.

Falcons R6 went 2-1 on the week, going a combined 4-0 in maps against Highland Community & Miami of Ohio in NECC & MWR6 respectively. In their MWR6 showdown with Miami, senior Ryan Colegrove dropped a 41/14/5 KDA. The Falcons suffered their only loss of the week in NACE against one of the top teams in the country, Fisher College. They'll look to recover this week as they take on UNC Greensboro.

Rocket League, fresh off a 2-2 weekend in the 2nd CRL East Fall qualifiers, secured a 3-1 victory over Seton Hill in NACE to start the week. The Falcons would cap the week off on a low note with a close 1-3 loss in WCRL to Carthage after starting the series with an overtime victory. UWRF Rocket League will face the Firebirds again on 11/3 in NECC.

Finally, Smash Ultimate cleaned up after their trip to Milwaukee for Cream City Convergence by taking down Northern Iowa in NECC & Grand Valley State in NACE. Junior Dom Schafer stole the show across both nights by taking over 30 stocks out of a possible 48 in the crew battles. In their showdown with Grand Valley State, Dom took down all 24 stocks single handedly while only dropping 4 in the process. Dom will look to repeat his performance tonight at 6:30PM against North Dakota State University in the team's lone NACE match of the week before they fly down to the Lone Star state for the annual Rise N Grind tournament in Waco, Texas.
