Big House 11 & Rockstar Invitational Recap

Active in three different states this past week, the Falcons made impressive tournament runs this past weekend while breaking even in league play.

A strong point for their inaugural varsity season, both UWRF Overwatch teams went undefeated last week in NACE and NECC. The F1 roster clutched out a 3-2 win over Drexel University in their sole map of the week to maintain their undefeated record at the top of their NACE Division. UWRF F2 did not drop a single map in their impressive wins against Ferris State and UW-Stevens Point as they improved to 2-2 in NACE and 2-0 in NECC.

Valorant started off the week strong with a clean sweep of Dunwoody College of Technology but faltered in their matchup against University of St. Francis. In similar fashion, the League of Legends squad achieved mixed results with a resounding win against UW-Stevens Point met with an equally devastating loss at the hands of Warner Pacific followed by a close 1-2 loss to Eastern Michigan that dropped them to 2-2 in NACE play. Overall, the Falcons put together an 8-8 week across all rosters as they worked toward the halfway point of the regular season.

In tournament action, UWRF Rocket League & Smash Ultimate took on nearly 2 dozen other Midwest rivals in Mankato, MN at the Rockstar Invitational hosted by Minnesota State University. In their first in-person tournament, the Falcon's Rocket League trio fell just short of their grand finals ambition with a 1-3 loss to University of Minnesota and 2-3 reverse sweep at the hands of Wayne State College en route to a respectable 4th place finish. They picked up quality wins against Minnesota State, St. Cloud State, and Dunwoody along the way. The Smash Ultimate team placed 7th after starting the tournament hot with a huge win over Buena Vista before getting knocked down to the lower bracket by eventual tournament runner-up University of North Dakota in a series that came down to the wire all 3 games. After their rebound win against University of South Dakota, the Ultimate roster met their match against 3rd place finishers Minnesota State.

In Detroit, Michigan, the Smash Melee team participated in The Big House 11, one of the largest Super Smash Bros. tournaments in the world. UWRF's Ben Strandmark led the charge with an impressive 33rd place finish out of over 1000 entries, losing only to Sasha "Magi" Sullivan and legendary Melee player Joseph "Mang0" Marquez. Anthony "Preeminent" Braun followed closely with a finish at 65th while Caleb Royal and Lamont "Lamonster" Santo rounded out the Falcon's finishes at 129th and 193rd respectively. The Melee Falcons will not be in action again until they travel to Chicago on November 4th for Out of the Blue 2.
