Falcons drop tight battle against No. 23 Titans

RIVER FALLS, Wis. – The UW-River Falls men's basketball team fell 79-70 against No. 23-ranked and WIAC-leading UW-Oshkosh Saturday afternoon.

The Falcons (10-12, 4-7 WIAC) and the Titans (17-5, 10-1 WIAC) were neck-and-neck for the majority of the contest until UWO pulled away late.

The lead wavered back-and-forth six times throughout the game, with both teams shooting over 50 percent from the field. The Titans held a slim 32-28 edge in rebounds and were hot from beyond the arc with a clip of 10-for-21, led by a lights out shooting effort from Quinn Steckbauer, who compiled a game-high 24 points with six made three-pointers.

UWRF got off to a good start, earning a 19-10 lead just over 11 minutes into the contest after a Marshall Holland made triple and a pair of free throws from Mateo Renta. UWO responded on a 17-6 run to take back a 27-25 lead, and led 35-31 at the half.

The visitors opened the second half extending their lead to eight minutes in, and led until a Jedwabny triple with 8:25 left in regulation gave the home team a 53-52 lead. From there, UWRF and UWO exchanged leads four times before the Titans eventually maintained control.

Four Falcons scored in double figures, led by Rodrick Payne's 16 points and seven rebounds. Dylan Parker followed with 12 points and three assists, while Logan Jedwabny and Jack Leifker each had 10.

UWRF returns to action next Wednesday, Feb. 8 at UW-Stevens Point.
