RIVER FALLS, Wis. — The UW-River Falls men's soccer team won its home match against UW-Whitewater, 3-1, at Ramer Soccer Stadium on Friday, Oct. 4.
The game marked the first official WIAC conference matchup for the UWRF men's soccer program and improved the team's record to 4-6 on the season.
The Falcons wasted no time taking an early lead in the match, as sophomore forward Victor Vancauteren scored his first goal as a Falcon in the 7th minute. After a cross got deflected in the box, Vancauteren sought out the ball and found an alley to score, giving UWRF an early 1-0 lead.
The Warhawks responded quickly, as a goal by Cooper Re in the 18th minute leveled the game at 1-1. UWRF held a narrow 12-11 lead in shots in the first half, as both teams went into halftime knotted at one goal a piece.
The story of the second half was UWRF's top goalscorer, Landon Christiansen. The freshman scored in the 62nd minute off assists from Gabriel Abad Lobo and Sorel Richardson to put UWRF up 2-1. Despite UW-Whitewater totaling 17 shot attempts in the second half, the Falcons held off any further goals, behind six second-half saves by goalkeeper Alvaro Boned.
In the 84th minute, Christiansen put the game away with his second goal of the day, this time assisted by Richardson and Charlie Theis. The goal was the seventh of the season for Christiansen, and marked his second multi-goal performance of the year.
Christiansen led UWRF with five shots, while Richardson and Ben Harris each had four. Boned finished the day with 10 saves.
Next up, the Falcons are set to travel to Duluth, Minnesota to face off with St. Scholastica on Oct. 8. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
