CLERMONT, Fla. – The UW-River Falls softball team continued its 12-game spring break trip on Sunday morning, falling against the College of Saint Mary before shutting out Framingham State.
UWRF, now 6-2 overall, returns to action on Tuesday, March 19 against Manchester University and Bowdoin College.
Saint Mary 4, UW-River Falls 3
During game one on the day, the Falcons scored three runs off six hits, including homers from a pair of freshmen;
Hannah Effertz and
Abby Pitts. The Flames scored four runs off 10 hits, scoring the eventual game-winning run in the fourth inning.
UWRF took a 1-0 lead in the second with Effertz first career homer, followed by Pitts' first solo shot as a Falcon in the fourth, giving UWF a 3-2 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth, Saint Mary tallied three hits to push run across for the game-winner, leading 4-3. In the seventh,
Johanna Breyen doubled to score
Tessa Peterson, cutting the Flames' lead to 4-3, but she was caught on the base paths for the final out.
Breyen, Pitts, and Effertz led the way with three hits each.
Emily Crowe started in the pitcher's circle, lasting four innings.
Brooklyn VanGruensven followed with a pair of scoreless innings in relief.
UW-River Falls 2, Framingham State 0
In game two of the day and number four of the spring trip, UWRF held Framingham scoreless while surrendering five hits.
Maggie Wallin collected her third complete game of the season and second shutout, tallying an impressive 13 strikeouts in seven innings.
UWRF was held to just two hits, but made it count in the third inning, scoring a couple of unearned runs.
Hannah Richards was hit by a pitch and came around to score the game-winning run, while
Kelly Aultman drove in
Johanna Breyen with an RBI single to give UWRF the two-run cushion.
