RIVER FALLS, Wis. – The No. 1-ranked UW-River Falls women's hockey team skated to a 2-1 victory over St. Olaf College on Tuesday night at Hunt Arena.
The Falcons improved to 5-1 overall, led by a late second-period power play goal from Alexa Niccum for the game-winner.
UWRF controlled play early, outshooting the Oles 14-6 in the opening period. The Falcons broke through at 13:20 when Kylie Jones buried her first goal of the season off a pass from Megan Goodreau, and UWRF led 1-0 after 20 minutes.
St. Olaf pulled even midway through the second period as a Bryn Etzell shot from the point found its way through traffic and past goaltender Jordan O'Kane. The tie game was short lived however as the Falcons converted on a power play chance late in the second period as Niccum scored her first of the year, the eventual game-winning goal, assisted by Madison Kadrlik and Kaitlyn Ronn.
Up 2-1, the Falcons continued to dictate the pace, generating 15 more shots and denying all four Ole power plays on the night. O'Kane was sharp in net, turning away every St. Olaf attempt in the third period to close out the one-goal win with 18 total saves.
UWRF finished with a 31-19 shot advantage and went 1-for-3 on the power play.
This weekend, the Falcons head to Middlebury College to compete in the Panther/Cardinal Classic in Middlebury, Vt. UWRF is slated to face No. 6-ranked Plattsburgh State on Saturday and will face either No. 3 Middlebury or No. 9 Endicott on Sunday.
