MANKATO, Minn. – The UW-River Falls men's basketball team came up short on the road Saturday afternoon, falling 82-80 in overtime against Bethany Lutheran. The Falcons rallied from a double-digit deficit to force overtime, but a Vikings three at the buzzer ended the comeback rally.
Micah Thompson anchored UWRF with his third double-double of the season, finishing with 20 points and 14 rebounds on 7-of-11 shooting. Thompson went 6-of-8 at the free throw line and had two assists for the Falcon offense.
Gavin Ralph added 18 points on 6-of-10 shooting, including 2-of-4 from deep, while Reggie Postel provided a spark off the bench with 14 points, hitting four threes and coming up with two steals. Jeremy Wanguhu finished with eight points, six rebounds, and three steals. Daniel Cleary added eight points and three boards.
Trailing 36-28 at halftime, the Falcons came back to life in the second half, outscoring Bethany Lutheran 42-34 to tie the game at 70-70. UWRF held a one-point lead into the final seconds of overtime. Thompson hit a jumper with 40 seconds left followed by two free throws with four seconds remaining to put the Falcons up 80-79. However, the Vikings connected on a contested three as time expired to seal the result.
UWRF finished the afternoon shooting 42.1 percent from the field with seven made threes and shot 75.8 percent mark at the line. The Falcons also won the rebounding battle 49-36, led by Thompson's game-high 14 boards.
The Falcons move to 3-5 on the season and will return to action next weekend as they continue nonconference play, taking on Hamline in St. Paul, Minn.
