NEWBERG, Ore. — The UW-River Falls women's lacrosse team was victorious 13-12 against George Fox.on day two of its stretch of three consecutive games against schools in Oregon.
The win improved UWRF's record to 4-2 on the year and 2-0 so far on its west coast trip. The Falcons overcame an early 4-1 deficit and capitalized off a huge third quarter to take a narrow victory on the road.
George Fox scored two goals within the first minute, which put UWRF behind 2-0 until Kinlee Knutson scored the Falcons' first goal at 11:54. However, the Bruins added four more goals in the period compared to two for the Falcons, which put UWRF behind 6-3 after one.
The second quarter saw Megan Peter, Avery Watzke, and Samantha Hayek score to give UWRF a 3-1 advantage in the period, which put George Fox ahead 7-6 at the halftime break.
Natasha Berthiaume and Watzke scored within the first 1:03 of the second half, giving the Falcons their first lead of the game up 8-7 early in the third. Both teams exchanged a flurry of goals after this point, before UWRF eventually built up a 12-10 lead heading into the final quarter. The Falcons held a 9-5 advantage in shots on goal in the fourth quarter.
The fourth period was low scoring, as Brooke Glumack scored unassisted at the 14:10 mark to put the Falcons up 13-10. No further goals were scored for roughly 13 minutes, as UWRF held onto its narrow lead. The Bruins scored twice in the final minute, but a decisive draw control by Molly Pierce after George Fox's last goal allowed UWRF to hold on to victory.
Glumack led the way with five points off three goals and two assists, while Hayek finished with four points off three goals and one assist. Kinless Knutson and Avery Watzke scored two goals each. Annelise Rommeck earned the win at goalie, recording 13 saves.
Next up, UWRF will close out the three-game road trip against Lewis & Clark in Portland, Oregon on March 20. The game is set to begin at 6 p.m. PT.
