WAUKESHA, Wis. — The UW-River Falls women's lacrosse team lost its road matchup at the Carroll Pioneers on Sunday, March 9, falling 11-9.
The loss marked a split weekend for the Falcons, who were victorious against Lake Forest yesterday. Brooke Glumack led UWRF with five points in the loss, bringing her weekend total to 12 points off seven goals and five assists.
After Carroll started the game up 2-0, Samantha Hayek got the Falcons on the board with the team's first goal of the game, trimming the deficit to 2-1. The Pioneers added two more goals with under two minutes left in the period, leading 4-1 after one.
Back-to-back goals by Molly Pierce and Murphi Specht within the first five minutes of the second period helped River Falls further trim the deficit to 4-3. The second period was defensive in nature, as both teams combined for only seven shots. Even so, Carroll scored two additional goals to go back up 6-3, before Samantha Hayek scored with under 10 seconds remaining in the half to send the game into halftime at 6-4.
After Carroll scored at the 12:09 mark to go up 7-4, UWRF rattled off three straight goals to tie the game at 7-7. However, the Pioneers scored twice in the final two minutes to recapture a 9-7 lead heading into the final frame.
Both teams exchanged two goals each in the fourth period, but Carroll managed four saves, hurting UWRF's comeback hopes. Hayek and Brooke Glumack each scored in the fourth period, but Carroll held on to win 11-9.
Glumack led UWRF with five points off three assists and two goals, while Hayek totaled three points off three goals. Glumack also led UWRF with four ground balls and Natasha Berthiaume had a team-high three caused turnovers.
Up next, the Falcons will return to River Falls to host Aurora in the team's home opener on March 14. The game is set to start at 5 p.m. at Ramer Field.
