PLATTEVILLE, Wis. — The UW-River Falls softball team lost both games in its WIAC opener at UW-Platteville on Saturday, April 12.
The doubleheader shifted UWRF's season record to 15-11 overall and 0-2 in WIAC play.
UW-River Falls 8, UW-Platteville 2
In game one, the Falcons started off strong with a two-run inning in the top of the first. Kelly Aultman hit a home run to left field that scored Caitlyn Kressel and put UWRF up 2-0. The home run was her eighth of the year, which leads the WIAC.
The Pioneers answered back with two runs in the bottom of the first off a home run of their own that leveled the game at 2-2. An error and single netted two more runs for Platteville in the bottom of the second.
A four-run fifth inning tilted the game toward the Pioneers, as four RBI-singles extended the home team's lead to 8-2. The Falcons moved a runner to third in the top of the seventh, but were unable to put up any additional runs and fell by a final score of 8-2.
Aultman led UWRF with a 2-3 performance at the plate, totaling two RBIs and one run. Kressel went 2-2 with one run.
UW-River Falls 3, UW-Platteville 11
The second game of the doubleheader saw UW-Platteville jump out to a 7-0 lead through the first three innings.
The Falcons scored three unanswered runs, doing so off an error that scored Addi DeMeyer, an RBI-double by Kressel to score Grace Gardner, and an RBI-double by Aultman to score Kressel. UWRF trimmed the lead down to 7-3.
The Pioneers rallied four runs in the bottom of the fifth, ending the game in five innings.
Aultman led UWRF at the plate with a 2-3 performance, totaling a four-hit day.
Up next, the Falcons will officially host their first home games of the 2025 season. UWRF will have a busy week at Faye Perkins Softball Stadium, hosting UW-Stout on April 16, Bethel on April 17, and UW-Oshkosh on April 19.
