Box Score The Falcon men's hockey team battled back from a 2-0 deficit to earn a 2-2 overtime tie at UW-Stevens Point on Saturday night.
UWSP jumped out to a 2-0 first period lead off two goals by Johnny Meo. The first came at 9:15 and the second at 13:29. UWRF took four minor penalties in the first period but were able to kill off each. UWSP took two minors. There were a lot of shots in the first 20 minutes - UWSP held a 5-2 advantage.
UWRF's
Alec Hagaman scored the only goal of the second period to draw the Falcons to within 2-1. The unassisted goal came at 11:57 and it was Hagaman's third goal of the season. The Pointers had a 7-4 advantage in shots in the period.
With 28 seconds to play in the second period the Falcons were called for a five-minute major penalty for high sticking, giving UWSP an extended power play. UWSP took a penalty early in the third to help the Falcons kill off the penalty and stay in the game.
Things took a turn for the worse again midway through the third period when UWRF took another five-minute major penalty for checking from behind. But this time the Falcons used the situation to score what proved to be the game-tying goal.
Geoff Shewmake scored the short-handed goal at 13:05 with an assist to
Adam Cardwell. It was Shewmake's second goal of the season and the team's second short-handed goal of the year. UWRF had a 7-6 advantage in shots in the period.
UWSP outshot the Falcons, 5-0, in the extra period. But Falcon goalie,
Scott Lewan stopped all of the shots to help the Falcons gain the tie and an important NCHA point. Lewan stopped 21 shots in the game. UWSP's Brandon Jaeger stopped 11 shots.UWRF was 0-4 on the power play and UWSP was 0-8.
The Falcons, now 4-3-1 overall and 0-3-1 in NCHA play, will return to Hunt Arena on Nov. 30 and Dec. 1 to host UW-Superior in a NCHA series. Games both nights start at 7:05.
