Men's Hockey Ties Superior, 1-1

Hess scores lone goal

Willie Hess scored the Falcon's only goal of the game as UWRF played to a 1-1 tie against UW-Superior on Friday night at Hunt Arena.

The two NCHA foes struggled to score in a physical game, but Superior would strike late in the third to force overtime and an eventual tie to keep the Falcons winless NCHA play.

In the first period both teams were held scoreless and committed zero penalties, but the Yellowjackets did outshoot the Falcons, 10-8.

Both teams tallied 12 shots in the second period and the scored the game's first goal.

At 4:38 in the second period, Willie Hess (Lino Lakes, MN, Fresno, NAHL) found the back of the net on a 5-on-3 penalty to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead. The goal was assisted by Zach Schrotenboer (Geneva, IL, Chicago, NAHL) and Sean Roadhouse (Tulsa, OK, Texas, NAHL).

In the third period, Superior outshot UWRF, 8-6, and tied the game up.

At 8:14, Kevin Clark scored to tie the game at 1-1. Pat Dalbec and Joey Massingham were credited with assists on the goal.

The third period would expire with the two teams deadlocked at one goal a piece.

In overtime, the Yellowjackets outshot UWRF 5-1, but neither team could find the game-winning goal and the game ended in a 1-1 tie.

Falcon goalie Scott Lewan (Westland, MI, Alberni Valley, BCHL) recorded 34 saves in the game. Superior goalie Drew Strandberg saved 26 shots.

After the tie, UWRF moves to 4-3-2 overall and 0-3-2 in the NCHA. Superior moves to 7-2-1 overall and 4-2-1 in the NCHA.

Game two of the weekend doubleheader will be played Saturday, Dec. 1 at 7:05 p.m. at Hunt Arena.
