Ryan Goodmanson and Jake Calleja scored the only Falcon goals as the men's hockey team fell to Stevens Point, 5-2, on Friday night at Hunt Arena.
The Falcons played well, shooting the puck 34 times and not allowing a powerplay goal, but it was Stevens Point who took advantage of their chances and pulled ahead on the scoreboard.
In the first period the Falcons outshot the Pointers, 12-8. Stevens Point, however, would be the team with the lead at the end of the period.
Early in the game, at 1:19, Stevens Point's Joshua Daley scored the game's first goal. Daley's goal gave the Pointers a 1-0 lead and they would add another just under five minutes later, at 6:09, when Johnny Meo sent one home to give the Pointers a 2-0 lead.
The Falcons showed signs at the end of the first period, particularly when Ryan Goodmanson (Clear Lake, WI, Kenai River, NAHL) scored his first of the year to cut the Pointer lead to 2-1. Geoff Shewmake (Chicago, IL, Bradford, GMHL) and Riley Borer (Minneapolis, MN, Fresno, NAHL) were credited with assists on the final goal of the first period.
In the second period, Stevens Point outshot UWRF, 13-12, and also added two more goals to pad the lead.
Daley scored his second at 6:43 in the period and Scott Henegar added a tally just 17 seconds later to give the Pointers a 4-1 lead.
The third period shot chart was once again owned by the Pointers as they outshot the Falcons, 14-10, but each team would add goals.
Evan Dixon added the final score for the Pointers at 10:20 in the period to give Stevens Point a 5-1 lead.
The Falcons would score the games only powerplay goal of the night, at 14:50 in the third, when Jake Calleja (New Richmond, WI, Wisconsin, MnJHL) added his second of the season to make it 5-2. George Malliaras (Palos Hills, IL, Texas, NAHL) and Willie Hess (Lino Lakes, MN, Fresno, NAHL) picked up assists on the game's final goal.
Scott Lewan (Westland, MI, Alberni Valley, BCHL) made 23 saves in the game before he was pulled in the third period for freshman Tanner Milliron (New Richmond, WI, Wisconsin, SIJHL), who made seven saves.
The loss drops the Falcons to 10-7-3 overall and 3-7-3 in the NCHA. The Pointers improve to 12-7-1 overall and 6-6-1 in the NCHA.
The Falcons will return home on Saturday, January 26 to play host to St. Norbert College at 7:05 p.m.
