Scott Lewan (Westland, MI, Alberni Valley, BCHL) saved 34 shots and earned his first shutout of the season as the Falcon men's hockey team defeated UW-Stout, 3-0, on Thursday night at Hunt Arena. The game was the final home game for the Falcons of the 2012-2013 season and also Senior Recognition night.
The Falcons out shot Stout, 12-9, in the first period and scored all three goals of the game in the first frame.
Senior Adam Cardwell (Long Beach, CA, Wichita Falls, NAHL) struck first on Senior Night when he went top shelf to score the game's first goal and his 13th of the year at 4:30 in the period. Willie Hess and George Malliaras notched assists on the goal.
At 15:52 in the period, Blake Huppert (Wasilla, Alaska, Alaska, NAHL) scored on the powerplay to extend the Falcon lead to 2-0. Zach Schrotenboer and Hess recorded assists on the game's only powerplay goal.
Just over a minute later, at 17:10, Mike Williams scored his second goal of the year to give the Falcons a 3-0 lead. Jake Calleja and Jeff Burke were credited with their eighth and ninth assists respectively.
Stout would outshoot the Falcons, 25-14, in the second and third periods, but the combination of killing off six powerplays and Lewan's stone-wall performance kept the Blue Devils off the scoreboard.
The penalty boxes were full all night as the Falcons were assessed 13 penalites for 26 minutes and the Blue Devils were assessed eight penalties for 27 minutes.
The win improves the Falcons to 11-8-3 overall and 4-8-3 in the NCHA. Stout falls to 10-10-2 overall and 5-10-0 in the NCHA.
UWRF will now travel to Eau Claire to take on the NCHA leading Blu Golds on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m.
